Slits/louvers in the stairs

Slits/louvers in the toe plate in the stairs on a 5th wheel going up the stairs going to the bedroom does anyone know why they are there, to me it just cols air coming from the storage area.

They allow return air to the furnace. Many people cover them from the inside during summer when furnace not used.

I placed a thin rubber flap on the back of the vents and when the furnace comes on it opens and draws from the vents and when it shuts off the rubber flap closes and keeps the cold from coming in. And keeps the heat from coming in when its hot outside in the summer and the basement doors are open.

Great idea! To bad Keystone doesn't make it more like a heater vent like in your house with moveable louvers than you could open and close as needed
