Class A noncommercial license.

Many states including California appear to require special licensing based on the weight of your rig or a combination of your rig, and what you drive to tow your rig.
In California, that requires a road test as well as written, and health document. They want you to test with the rig you plan on towing. But you cannot tow it to the test. Any suggestions?

Grab a friend or relative with a CDL and tell them they owe you a favor - or beg!

Take someone with you that has that level of license and have a learners permit. I did but they never checked how I got it there.

The requirement for my non com class A was because the GVWR of the trailer was over 15,000 lbs.

Hi

Just go get your commercial CDL they must give them away thru the mail. I have had several 80,000 semis park in the road because the driver couldn’t read, speak or understands English and their bill of lading was all in English and they couldn’t find the address.

One said “no English Russian” the other couldn’t even speak that much English.

Also, study the DMV handbook on RVs and trailer towing, not the class A handbook. It can be found online. When you take the written test be ready to take the written tests for all licenses you currently hold. The driving part for me included backing up into a "simulated" rv camping spot. It amounted to a 90 degree backing turn so tight my rig didn't have the turning radius to fit within their boundaries. It wasn't pretty but they gave me grace on it since semis turn sharper than a Dodge. Also be prepared to quickly point out all controls in the cab ie; flashers, horn, emergency brake, etc.
