Converter/charger

First post and I need advice. Having trouble with electrical on 5th wheel Montana. I replaced converter/charger and made one trip to Colo. Batterys not charging well but batterys checked ok. Got home and pulled new converter and cheked everything out. Put converter on work bench and plugged it into to 120ac. At that second there was pop and flash, smoke came from converter case. Immediately I pulled plug. What the heck happened? I thought when I plugged it in I would see how much current it was putting out (volts). What caused this event.? It was of course plugged into rv 120 plug before I pulled it out! Help!

By rv plug, do you mean a 30/50 amp receptacle or just you typical home receptacle.

First it was in rv 120 plug but removed it when it wasn't charging proper...I then removed it to work bench and plugged it into house 120, to test with meter. Fire flew.

Im stumped on that one. Any chance you put 120 volts to the 12 volt side of the converter. ?

Sounds like you may have wired it wrong and let the magic smoke out of the box! Send it back and don't till them what you did!
