Surge Guard TRC #34750

I'm considering getting the Surge Guard TRC#34750 surge protector. Has anyone used this? Additionally, this looks to be easily stolen. Has this happened to anyone?

When we were using a portable unit, we found a big pad lock that would fit around the cable on the unit and put a section of 3/8" log chain onto that lock with the cable, then would wrap the chain around the post and lock it into it's self with another pad lock.

With my 34750, I wrap some chain around the power post and lock it to itself, then cover the entire post with an old tire cover. If questioned I say the cover is to keep everything dry...you can't see the SG.

I have had ours for over 5 years and yes-it has the lock. No one has touched in all the camping we do--about 3-4 months a year.

We use the progressive EMS system and it comes with a fixture to affix a lock and chain to it. We lock it every time so we've never had a problem.

You might find you'll just want to upgrade to a better (more expensive) system. I have the interior model and while it protects against surges and a poor power supply just like the model you mention, there are better units that condition the power, raises the voltage if there's a chance of a brownout and other better protection and features (of course they are more expensive, too).

I hope there will be other post on the benefits of better units.

If you are looking to just protect against surges or a poor power pole, this will work and while I haven't heard too many theft stories, I have heard of some and it only takes one of those stories for me to prefer and install the interior model (or have it installed). At least you now know what to expect and what you are not getting on which to base your purchase. I do wish I had a better system.

We've used one for years and don't worry about it being stolen. Camping World sells a product that allows you to lock the Surge Guard to the electric cable and use a security cable to lock the entire thing to either the rig or the power pedestal. We also have a 34730 that we used before we bought the Montana.

My EMS of choice is the Progressive built-in 50A with remote. Works great and never have to be concerned about theft.

I just got one and was looking to get the locking device and it locks the surge protector to the power cable,so in the event of a low life goodbye cable and protector.I like the chain idea

Been using the 50 amp Progressive for close to 3 yrs. Locked it up at first, then for some unknown reason quit locking it up. Still have it and never had a problem. And I am a fulltimer. There is another choice if you haven't bought one yet and thats to install a hard wired one in your unit. If you are electrically savy no problem, but if your like me, I stay way away from electricity. I don't understand it so I won't deal with it.
