Opinions on hot water on demand?

This is not really a problem, just something I've been thinking about.

I have my hot water tank back in operation. (new element and propane regulator) When I leave for the weekend I turn off the tank outside. I can't really see the point of heating water for three days that I'm not using. So now I'm thinking. Why heat water all day I'm not using. I had a timer on my brick and mortar and I'm wondering if turning off the tank when I'm going to be gone all day would serve the same purpose.

I have the 10 gal tank and it has a pretty quick recovery on electric when I return from a three day trip.

What are your opinions? Would it be more cost effective to heat up a cold tank once a day or keep the water hot all day, even if I only use hot water once a day?
