I don't think the short box bed is any higher than a long box bed. It is just around a foot and a half shorter. Hitches and pin. Boxes have hight adjustments so you can get the correct bed rail to fifth-wheel clearance, usually around six inches. A lot of people tow fifth-wheels with short boxes now, some with sliding hitches and some with standard hitches. The extended pin boxes on most of the new fivers and the shape of the front cap allow short box owners to tow fifth-wheels with out to much worry. To achieve a full 90 degree manuver you will need the sliding hitch.
If your truck is really jacked up with extreamly tall tires and suspension than you might have issues. Some have taken the axles and swapped them to under the springs instead of above to make the fifth-wheel sit higher. Others have added spacers if necessary, either way it is probably something for a professional suspension shop to do.

I towed ours with a 2007 F350 FX4 long bed. Had to adjust the hitch down a bolt hole and no problem. Still plenty of rail clearance.
Now have a 2012 F350 FX4 that is even taller. Moved hitch to the lowest bolt hole. Still 6" rail clearance. But the Monte does sit slightly nose high. But not enough to worry about.

Have never towed without four wheel drive truck. Never have had a problem with hitch, with our ford trucks

The height of our F350 FX4 results in an elevated nose on our 5th. We have the Reese hitch with a Airborne Sidewinder Pinbox and the nose does ride high although lots of bed rail clearance. Not able to adjust the Pinbox due to clearance issues with the bottom of the nose of the trailer. Will be lowering the hitch about 1". Will still ride nose high but it's the best I can do.
