We Need Ocassional Internet Access
I tried the search feature, but posts from 2005 didn't help much . I am looking for information on mobile internet hotspot/"mifi" for when we are camping. Unfortunately, we are not full timers yet, so only go out on weekends and for a couple of weeks a year on longer trips. I'm looking for an internet solution to leave in the Montana when we are away to connect a temperature sensor to that will alert me if the temps get too hot for the furry family member. Something along the lines of a Mifi that will run off of battery if the power goes out, but more importantly, one I can activate only when we are out with the Montana. Our cells (Verizon) have 18Gig plan and hotspots available, but we both carry those with us. Hoping someone can point us towards a company that can provide such a device. Thanks!
Ken

I started looking at this suggested website AWHEELER posted - could be a very good resource for you

Thanks. I was looking through their site also. I thought I remembered some others saying they used a "pay as you go" system but have been unable to find it on the search. Might have to post it on the FB group as maybe it was there.

You could always go ahead and buy a spare phone. Other than the cost to buy the phone it is not much to add it to your plan.

We use a cheap tablet we bought from Verizon and added it to our plan at. $10/month. It works ok for that purpose.

With your 18 gig plan, I think you can add a MiFi for and additional $10/month. We just take our MiFi between our RV and House as we need it.

Ken, since you have Verizon for your carrier go in and talk to them about this. We have a Jet Pack we use even though we have hot spot capability on both of our phones. As also suggested the use of a cheap Ipad/tablet through Verizon and add it to your monthly charge and you have another hotspot that can be left on while you're goneand you can view the temps that way also. Good luck and see you in Goshen in September.

Does the JetPack have a stronger or better connection than a Smart phone or is it the same as phone or tablet? I have a tablet from ATT and it works okay but have been in places where neither phone or tablet (AT&T) would work. But usually Verizon does. They must have better coverage (Verizon).

I'm skeptical about using a tablet or phone as a hotspot. I have read several places that the connection is sketchy and won't reconnect on its own. I'd hate to be an hour away at 9am and find out my ipad didn't like the temp sensor and kicked it off.

UPDATE: We ended up getting a Verizon hotspot added to our plan. It is $10 a month, but will be worth it with the peace of mind our furry family member is safe. Thanks to all for the input.

The Mifi itself was $99.
We looked at several options...hotspot via phone, hotspot via ipad and cellular sensors. The wifi temp sensor uses very minimal data and sparingly, which in and of itself creates a problem. Phone and tablet hotspots are programed to disconnect and turn off after a set amount of time with no activity. Cellular was more expensive up front and not a bad monthly price, but was a one trick pony. At least with the Mifi we can use it for any mobile internet usage.

I would just call as most of them never heard of this plan, call and give them the internal plan number. or even call the local Verizon store that way you can get everything in order and then go get it, done the same day.
