Emerson Portable Ice Maker????
Target has the Emerson Portable Ice Maker for $119.00. We thought we would give one a try as some people love them. The reviews on it stink. Does anyone have one and did it work well and hold up.
We have been doing some research and the Magic Chef has good reviews. OK we will buy it from Walmart. $150.00... Uh looks just like the Emerson. Then I read on the net that the same maker is branded by 3 companies, Emerson, Magic Chef, and forgot the other.
Any infro would be appreciated.

We have went through several different ones over the years, from Camping World brand to Magic Chef to Emerson. The way I figure the purchase viability is pretty simple. If I camp without an ice maker, I will buy several bags of ice. If the price of the bagged ice is $3.00 a bag (more likely $4.00 at most campgrounds), then my break-even point for the ice maker is 40 bags of ice. All of the ice makers we have had (currently have an Emerson that is over a year old and still working and a three year old Magic Chef that just died - running non-stop in stick house) have lived for over two years. Simple math told me that I could not go wrong with purchasing the ice makers. I can assure you that before we got our first one, we were purchasing way over 20 bags of ice a year. I have never regretted the purchase, since I know I cannot freeze enough ice in the rig's freezer compartment to keep up with the family needs. If the math works for you, go for it. This is presented as only my experience and how I justify an ice-maker purchase every two or three years.

What Jim and Bingo said. We have a Magic Chef we, too, got on sale. Haven't bought a bag of ice in 3 or 4 years! Keeps beverages and cooler cold. Just keep the water filled and you'll have plenty of ice.

Keep in mind that this ice-maker is not a freezer. The ice melts after being made since the only cooling effect is from the ice itself. That is why the ice bucket is above the water reservoir,as it melts the water is recirculated. You will not notice this as much when the basket if full. If you prefer your ice to be more dry and hard, bag it in Ziplocs and stash it in the freezer.

Bought the Emerson from Target a few years ago and have had no problems so far. We take the ice fron the Emerson and put it in the freezer for awhile to harden. Would buy another.

Hi Bill,
We have the Emerson for about 1 yr now. Read the brief manual, and you'll love it for $119. Enjoy.

I had one of the expensive ones from CW. It quit after a year. I then got one from Target. So far it has lasted three years with no trouble. We love it.

If you want to spend a little extra money check out a U_LINE ice maker.
I've had mine for about ten years with no trouble. It will hold 12 lbs. of ice and make 23 lbs. a day. Right now I have it in the underbelly, works out nice having it there, filling coolers, drinks. Price is right at $1000, but it pumps out the ice and keeps it froze.

We just got our second Emerson. The first one lasted about four years. We think it's really worth it, especially in the summer when it's hot outside! Go for it!

Update... Bought the Emerson today and went by the instructions and let it sit for an hour then plugged it in. Has been making ice all afternoon. At first seemed to take forever but once you forget about it and look a few hours later a basket full. I think it will be great! Thanks to all who posted. The price range went from $100-$300. If this keeps our daily cooler going I will be happy. We will empty and freeze in ziplocks and I think it will do the job. So far very pleased.

We got one with the new Montana. Our favorite campground does not sell ice, and it is about 12 miles or 1 gallon of diesel each way to get it. That makes ice $9.00 a bag. Gotta love my new icemaker.
