EMS
I installed a Progressive Industries 50 Amp EMS in our Monty today to protect against Surges and and bad power. Our Power booster had 2 boards burnt out when lighting hit a transformer near a campground we where in even though it has 3500 joules of surge protection. We now have double protection.

I've got the portable one ordered to replace my regular surge protector as we speak. You hear too much about low or high campground power to take a chance.

In my 3400 the breaker box is in the bathroom. So I removed the bulkhead in the basement under the bathroom. Right there was the power cable leading to the breaker box. There was more then enough cable to make the splice and add the EMS. This is also where the other end of the generator pre wire was. So there was plenty of room for the transfer switch and EMS.

I mounted in the front compartment and mounted the remote read out on the wall of the TV cabinet. Our Monty is Generator prepped and I wired it where it comes out of the Iota box to the panel.

We were hit by lightening this summer and the Progressive 50 Amp portable Surge Guard saved our Monty. The surge guard was wasted as the 2 minute and 15 second delay stopped working. This lightening hit our farm shop on the roof (we think) where the Monty is parked then ran down the metal siding to get to ground leaving scorch marks on the exterior wall. Two circuit breakers were tripped at the shop but not the 50 Amp circuit. The surge of electricity got past the breaker but not the Surge Guard. I have now grounded the shop metal roof and siding at all 4 corners. We purchased a new Surge Guard and I kept the old one (marked it real well as BAD). I save old stuff especially a $300 item for a while just in case there could possibly be an alternative use for parts. Recently the new Surge Guard detected an out of range voltage and shut off the electricity. I called the electric company and they came out and checked and found voltage surging above 133+ and our guard trips at 132 (I believe). Caney Fork Electric had contractors working on the lines nearby and the crew had allowed high voltage to pass through to maybe 20 users for about 2 days. The electric company thanked me for calling and they fixed the problem. Not one other neighbor to my knowledge ever knew their appliances and computers being cooked.

We have the 50 amp also. When we had the front A/C unit installed the readout shows that both units are on the same leg. Is that correct?

Hard wired vs. Portable
Any burning reason to buy one over the other? My personal inclination is to go the easy route and buy the portable. Someone else mentioned the ability to keep it for the next RV as well.
Also, I suppose it's okay to use the 50amp portable EMS with 30amp service in conjunction with a 30amp to 50amp conversion cord?
Thanks

They are electronic devices and as such can fail. I went with portable so if it acts up I can remove it (first portable we had starting on high voltage, but was way below the thresh hold). Unless you have some sort of transfer switch my understanding is if you have problems with a hardwired unit you must move wires from it back to the breaker panel. If I'm out of line please correct me.

My hard-wired Progressive EMS has an on/off switch on remote display. Can turn it on/off at will.

That's good to know if we ever decide on a hard-wired unit (maybe our next rig). Must be model specific as we have friends in our Good Sam Chapter that have hard-wired ones in their MHs and if it fails they're either without power or pulling panels to re-wire.

The hard wire ones have a bypass if the computer fails.

I went with hardwire so I do not have to worry about it getting legs and walking off. Also with the hard wire I can not get lazy and not use it. In addition I can see the monitor from inside but when setting up I have to go inside to see if there is a problem.
