Good campgrounds west side of Glacier NP

We will be headed to Glacier National Park in late June this year. We plan on staying on the west side of the park for four days and based upon the reviews "Mountain Meadows" seems to be our first choice. We prefer backin sites, trees, and scenery. WiFi is desirable, but not a must.

Does anyone have recommendations for a good campground in the area or any experience staying at Mountain Meadows?

We have stayed at the KOA in West Glacier. As Jim n Deb stated it is pricey but first class all the way and super nice people that run the place. They were very accomadating on any of your needs in the park and had a great deal of knowledge of the entire area. Jim

The Going to the Sun road in Glacier had a 20' vehicle limit at the higher more windy parts of the road. My long bed Ford is 22' long but I would probably still do it. Shhhh, don't tell anyone.

DO NOT even attempt to tow a 5er through there. Besides the windy roads, the climbs and descents are "fun" just driving a vehicle.

We stayed in a KOA on the east side, it's just my opinion but I think the west side parks looked better. This was about 7 years ago. Next time around, we're definitely staying on the West side.

Let us know what you find and how it was.

Mountain Meadows! We loved it there even though we had a bit of trouble getting into our site. We stayed there for about a week. Love the way they carved out the sites among the many trees. I can't remember if we were able to get satellite tv or not.... I think we did. I also seem to remember that we were able to get cell service from Verizon.

When we stay on the West side we will choose to stay at MM. Enjoy, Dennis and Mary Kay

WE stayed at the KOA and thought it was a good choice. Our truck is around 21.5 feet and with the camper mirrors pushed in, It's over 8 feet wide. When we got to the critical area, we tucked the mirrors in. Glad we did in a number of places. Lots of construction on the road this past summer and width seemed more important than length.
I would not take a dually solo, much less with a 5er.
It is a great road and a must do if you can handle the height/drop offs along the way.
ENjoy your stay there.

We stayed in the West Glacier KOA three or four years ago in a pop-up. There were lots of big rigs there. Some sites with shade and some in the sun. It is the nicest park we have seen. I would highly recommend it.

We stayed at the West Glacier KOA last year, spent a few extra bucks to get a deluxe site, good food and good people, top notch park, great location too.

I think the 20' thing is arbitrary. The red busses that travel through the park are definately over 20'.

My 450 is long to begin with as it has a long bed. I also have a handicap lift that carries my cart on the front. This definitely puts me over the 20 foot limit. I looked at the Red buses and noted that they were over the 20 foot limit so if they can do it I figured I could do it too.

The agent at the entrance gate did note that I looked to be over the limit but did not prevent us from going on. Never had any problem anywhere on the road. I have no idea why they put a 20' limit.
Later, Dennis

We have not been to Mountain Meadows, but a second choice might be Spruce Park on the River. It is just east of Kalispell. Our Lilac City Sams are going there in August. The flyer we received and the website look like a very good CG. It is about 30 miles west of the west enterance to Glacier NP.

We stayed in Mountain Meadows in 2005 and liked it a lot. Our site was a pullthrough and a snap to get into.
Our site -

and our view from that site -

The picnic table and all are in the trees on the door side.

Thanks to everyone for the great feedback. We have booked four nights there in late June; can't wait to tour Glacier!
