Why has Bingo's posting .(Slideshow updated 5-21)

Fellow MOCers:
It may have not been noticed, but those who have been here a while know that I usually cannot resist putting my two cents in regarding a lot of matters. My posting frequency has decreased and for those who may be interested I thought I would provide a clue as to the reason. The other toy I have (boat) has been the culprit. I am in the process of constructing a dock and it is a major undertaking. I thought it would be interesting for the dock construction project that I am undertaking to post a slideshow album where I can update the construction process as it progresses. Anyone who has ever undertaken a similar project can appreciate the enormity of the undertaking (stubborn man-thing about not accepting help, simply so later I can say.....I did it myself!!!). I have posted a schematic plan view of the entire project and a pre-construction photo as well as a couple of photos of the project to-date. An interesting aspect of the project is that our yard is about 15 feet in elevation above the water so I had to engineer a solution for assembly and launch of the individual dock segments. There are twelve separate segments (including the ramp), of which three have been launched. Assembly is done in the yard upside down, then the segment is slid down the ramp with the help of ropes. The ramp can be seen in the third photo. A catcher board at the bottom allows for a resting place for the inverted segment, which is then flipped into the river with a 2x6x12 used as a pry lever. Each segment before the decking is applied weighs about 350 to 400 pounds. The decking is installed after launching. Total materials include 21 3'x6'x20" Permafloats, 2x6 treated framing, and 180 6"x5/4"x12' composite decking boards in addition to all of the galvanized hardware that is required. I am hopefully optimistic to have the entire structure completed before the 4th of July. The boat will be moored to the section shown by this weekend and then I will continue to add additional segments. Sorry for the post length, but the information and progress will at least prove interesting to some. The worst part is that we have not even been camping this year yet!!! The photo album can be viewed at:

Very interesting project Bingo. Looks like you have the design where it can move up and down with river fluctuations. I've always liked to do everything myself; you just have such a time getting quality work done now days. There's always some excuse as to why they make a mess.

What river would that be?

Will,
That is the Kanawha River in West Virginia, about 32 miles upstream from where it empties into the Ohio River. You are correct in the design, it is totally floating on the pilings to allow for the wave action from storms and passing barges. Ditto on the quality work, I have always said if you want something done right, you have to do it your self!!

You have made a small error in your planning. That dock is not big enough to hold the Montana. You need to go back to the drawing board.

Phil,
I knew I forgot something on the specifications. It will actually support the weight of the Montana, but I erred on not providing enough of a footprint. Geeesh!!!! FYI, the 21 floats will support a total of 18 tons!!!So if each section weighs around 400 pounds for a total of 4 tons then it can hold the 3400RL with ease.....provided the river weight police don't come after me!!!

Yes that is Winfield. You can see the Winfield bridge to Eleanor in the background of one of the pictures. If you know the history of the area, our house is on the site of the old Ferry crossing of the Kanawha River. Spent another three hours constructing this evening so hopefully, if I can talk DW into taking some pictures of it, the slideshow will be expanded a little sometime tomorrow.
Kerry, you know you are welcome to stop by anytime (PS: bring tools...HaHa!!)

Instead of a boat, how about every week just go to the dock and throw a couple of hundred bucks into the water? g
I figured this out after a few years of ownership.

Bingo,
I sure hope the power cord you are using is GFCI protected.

Jim,
Yes it is and the cord is bungeed well up out of the water where it crosses (spans) to the dock. There is only a span of about two feet where the cord is not on either the rocks or the dock structure itself. The next phase will remedy that since the steps and ramp to the dock itself are slated for the next installation. I tried the cordless approach with an 18v drill, but decided on the old-fashioned way since the time factor was noticeable. Guess I could take the Honda generator out on the dock so I wouldn't have to span the cord, I might do that after I get the steps and ramp in place.

Bingo,
Make sure the gen power is GFCI protected also. It has the same potential to kill as house current.

So, what sort of boat goes in that slip? I've got a boat project going on right now. Doing some fiberglass and gelcoat on an old BayHawk I bought last year.

Bingo I have had so many boats , yet we still have 4 boats as from 24' a 20' a 18' sail boat and a 14' fishing boat but the answer to a boat is a hole in the water to pour money into

That project looks like it’s coming along very well. I have one question and I don’t want to become one of Job’s comforters here either. What has to be done during the winter months? Are you going to have to remove the dock from the water or will it tolerate it if the water starts to freeze? I know where we live we’ve seen the Ohio River frozen over.
So, what gives?

Good question Bill,
The floats are the only thing in the water itself, and they are styrofoam filled. If the river did freeze, all that would happen is the floats would be pushed upward out of the water since they are tapered slightly. The float manufacturer recommends removal if the ice is large, broken and moving. The river where we are at flows at a good pace and as far as I know (last 6 years) has not frozen to any major degree. Bottom line, the entire system stays in the water year round. There are devices made that will stir the water and prevent freezing if it would be a problem. Where we are at, I don't think it will be a problem.
