Ford 6L Fuel Injectors

My 2004 6L Ford has 74K miles on it and the local dealer says that 3 of the fuel injectors show problems. It runs rough and has no power so I believe this is the problem. They are quoting $411 Cdn for each injector and $700 Cdn labour. I have decided to replace all 4 injectors as the bad ones are on the all on the same bank. This comes to a rather large chunk of change. Do these costs seem reasonable? Any suggestions as to alternatives?

I would go to Walmart and get some injector cleaner for diesels and run a couple of cans through, stronger than suggested. It's worth a try considering the alternative.

try the cleaner and have the EGR valve cked allso they are a littel pricey (about $250)but known for going bad

I have had to replace 2 of mine at different times and it ran about $1100.00 each time. I know yours is a Ford but both are about the same when it comes to parts and labor.

Well I just had a new Turbo put in my 2006 at warrenty and 1 dealer said it was injectors but the next dealer said it was turbo,,sailer

Our '04 6L blew its first engine at 58K. An injector burned out, dumped fuel and melted a hole in the piston. That one cost us over $10,000 for transportation and replacement of the engine. The new engine began smoking at 51K. The dealer told me that 5 of 8 injectors were bad and wanted $3400 US to repair it. I had them replace the two worst injectors at $1550, then jacked up the radiator cap and drove a 2010 Dodge Ram 3500 Dually under it.

The 6.0L will not get any better. I recommend you get rid of it and go with an engine/transmittion setup that will give you good service.

I have a good friend that had an '03 F250 6.0 that began to run really bad around 80K. His local dealer worked on it several times, replacing the turbo twice. Never solved the problem.
He took it to another dealer 15 miles away. They immediately replaced several injectors and it ran perfect again.
You might consider a second opinion, and a second estimate.

Thanks for all the replies. My trouble was two bad injectors and one doubtful. They were all on the same bank so I had all 4 replaced while it was apart. Cost was $370 Cdn each and about $700 labour. This included 2 hours for the diagnostic process and the service rep explained that they had to make sure it was the injectors and not something else since they guaranteeded the work. By this experience and by the posts of others I have decided that the modern diesel engine is no longer the reliable workhorse it was in the past. Meeting the ever stricter pollution requirements has pushed the designers into some very complicated hi tech sollutions. The engines are not only unreliable but expensive to buy and expensive to repair. However sadly it seems to be true that a gas engine is not powerful enough to pull our heavy rigs comfortably. A diesel is the only option.

rvberr, you are right about the new trucks. I have a old Ford diesel that we use on the farm that has over 370K miles on it and the only thing we have done is change the bad glow plugs when it get hard to start in the winter. While my new unit had less than 100K I have replaced 2 injectors, a EGR valve plus the mass flow oxygen sensor.

ALWAYS put 8 ounces of Prolong fuel oil additive in the crankcase with each oil change.

The injectors on a 6.0 are opened by engine oil, a sort of hydraulic setup.

Never use an oil thickener like Lucas or STP in the 6.0.
