Sorry but yes tires again

On edit :Goodyear tires are $275 each and not $175.

I was ready to purchase 4 new Goodyear “LT235/85R16 G614” for $275.00 each (tire only)until I did a check at Les Schwab here in western Washington. Les Schwab has a “LT235/85R16 Geostar G574 all steel highway blackwall” for $201.10. Both tires are G load rated at 3,750 pounds at 110 psi. I think the Les Schwab tires are made in Korea by Nankang. Not sure where the Goodyear are made.

My wheels are rated at 110psi so will be maked out with the new tires.

First question is what does “G614” and “G574” mean?
Second am I comparing apples and apples?
Third and I hope final question, is there any history on the quality of the Les Schwab tires? The price sure looks good to me.

Oh heck how about one more question, will I have a big problem if I have to put on my 235/80R/16 spare to get me to a safe location if I should have a blow out?

Sorry for all the questions but I want to get it right when we are talking over a $1000 expenditure.

No you can not mix tire size even for 5 miles as i have been told as you will throw off the axels balance i guess m,m,,sailer

One thing I can tell you Dick,I run Goodyear G614's and stamped on the side is "Made in USA"
Put those two tires together and than pick each one up and feel the difference, G614's are 14 Ply.

Dick, I don't understand why the price at Schwab looks so attractive. It probably includes mounting and balancing but here in KC that is only a $15 per tire charge. What am I missing?

Just wanted to be sure you knew that Nankang made the Missions. I had the Nankang name brand tires on a TT. Same sort of junk tires as the Missions they manufactured. All five tires separated (yes, even the spare on the rack)within 2 years of manufacture.

These are model numbers given to the tires by the manufacturer for identification purposes.

Yes, you are comparing apples to apples as far as the type, load, and ply are concerned. When it comes to quality though, IMHO, you are comparing apples to oranges. The Goodyear G614 is the better tire of the two brands.

A short distance of 2 to 5 miles at a slow speed would probably be ok, but I would recommend buying 5 tires of the same size as there is enough difference in the two sizes to cause problems.

I goofed, the Goodyear tires are $275.00 each, tires only no mounting and the same with Les Schwab; $201.10 each, tires only.

Of course, it's your money, but besides the fact of where the tires are made, consider the fact that should you have a problem, it's a lot easier to find a Goodyear dealer.

I purchased 5 Goodyear G614's which included mounting,balancing and steel valve stems at America's Tires which is Discount Tires for a little over $1200.00,
and they knew what Centric Balancing was.

Dick, we used to have a Montana with "D" load rating tires. I bought a used replacement tire that looked almost new for next to nothing at the tire place but it was an "E" load rated tire. I went ahead and put that on the axle in place of the bad tire rather than making it the spare. After a few thousand miles I stopped in Goshen to ask the factory service center to see if I have an axle alignment problem. They measured and said it's out of alignment and it is because of the different resistance of that E tire on one end of the axle and the D on the other.

So, if that can throw an axle out of alignment, my guess is you would have the same problem with two different tire sizes on an axle. I don't know that for sure but that would be my bet based on what the service manager at Keystone told me.

Thanks all for your help. I bit the bullet and ordered 4 new LT235/85R16, G614 from Goodyear and will have them installed next week when we move. The total price out the door and rolling down the road including Washington State sales tax was $1,155.00. That's the best I could do.

As far as my spare goes, I think I will keep looking for a used one the same size and drive on it only if I have a problem, and then only a short distance.

I will be getting a cash rebate from Tireco but will have to wait to see what they can do for me.
