Tire Rotation on Monty?

Just wanted to know if I have missed something. Does Keystone or Dexter recommend any type of tire rotation on the trailer? I am having some new tires put on this weekend.

Thanks

Think about the reasons you rotate the tires on your car/truck. The front tires are doing the turns and the rear tires are driving or providing the traction to overcome initial inertia. This will create different wear characteristics on front and rear tires, hence the need to rotate for even wear.

Since the trailer wheels are basically idler or passive wheels, I don't think the same reasons would mandate rotation. However there may be other factors of which I am unaware.

The weight on all 4 tires should be the same and if not very close unless the trailer is not level when being towed, why are you replaceing tires on a Montana that is less than a year old. Roman

I am simply speculating and I don't rotate my tires but after thinking about this, I might. In tight turns your tires scrub. Going forward the front scrubs somewhat more. Going backward the reverse is true but presumably you are going slower. I suggest that perhaps you distribute sidewall wear better if you rotate the tires. Another possible reason is more ozone exposure on one side or the othe particularly for those that sit a lot. When I have a choice I try to keep the hottest sun on the curb side where the tires are protected by the awning.

Just a bunch of random thougts but perhaps one of our tire experts will chime in.

I guess I was just looking for a simple answer to my question.

Bob,
I have not rotated my tires on either of my Montana's. So far these tires seem to be wearing very well, hope it stays that way. As you know I did balance them for my peace of mind, cant say for certain it is going to help or not.

RKassl - there is never a simple answer to a question on the MOC forum - that is what makes it so much more interesting!

Bob, the fact is that you will have to replace your tires long before you notice any great tread wear, so the simple answer would be that you “HAVE” to replace the trailer tires every five years, or sooner even if you have most of the original tread left, because the sun rays will cause the sidewalls to start cracking and split.

In most cases the tires will age rather than tread wear.I have been told trailer tires should be replaced in about 4 years. So after say that no need to rotate for most of us.
