1997 Dodge V-10

We're now the proud new owner of an 06 340RL, and the proud, but underpowered owner of a 97 Dodge V-10. On the way home from the dealer in Boise, our top speed was about 30mph going up the steeper grades to Cascade. Anyone know about chips or any preformance enhancer for the v-10. I have a free flow exhaust and K&M air filter. I used to cuss those slow movers -- now I am one.

Congratulations, John & Jenni!

Something doesn't sound right about the V10. My aunt and uncle fulltimed for six years and used Dodge V10's, including about that vintage, to tow a 34' Excel Noble Esquire triple-slide fifthwheel. Those are not lightweights. I don't recall hearing about any problems climbing hills. But how steep and long were those hills? There are some in Colorado that just might pull a gas engine down to about that speed, especially at high altitude, like I-70 from west to east. I did a S&T search for 'Cascade' and found that name in several states.

Welcome John & Jenni to the MOC Family.
Being a GM man there isn't much I can do for ya except to say "hang in there some Dodge man will be around shortly".

Hi John
Sounds like you have a performance problem with that V-10! We tow a 3255RL with a "95" Dodge 3500 V-10, with 120,000 miles. In March we went to Tennessee and pulled Jelico MT. on 9 cylinders (had a fouled spark plug) and still out ran the big rigs. My guess is you have catalytic converter problems possibly combined with or caused by oxygen sensor problems. Hope you can find a good diagnostician/mechanic! That V-10 is a powerful engine and should pull like crazy!
Good Luck.
Terry

I would have to agree with TandJ. Sound to me like you got something wrong. I know a friend of mine that had a V10 and it would pull like a tank. Didn't miss many gas stations, but it would pull anything we put behind it. I would schedule a trip to the dealer and have everything tested. It should pull better than 30mph.

You might check for a partially plugged cat converter. I was losing power in an older Ford 460, couldn't do more than 50 mph in a strong headwind. After checking everything, that turned out to be the problem. I didn't discover that until it finally split due to the high temps. My wife had been telling me for some time that the floorboard was getting unusally hot on her side.

We pulled our 3670 with our 96 v10 for a year but I did change the 3.55 gears for 4.10 which made a huge difference.

I agree I think you have a problem. My Montana Dealer has a V 10 and told me it will pull with no problem any Momtana on his lot.
