Ozz and KOA - Montana Owners Club

We love it here at Destination South Padre RV park, but.......
KOA bought it and now the big Corporate machine is kicking in, they changed the Internet connection, that was messed up for a few days, I fear they will start charging, also rates for next year per month is $938.00 where we are, and 1283.00 for the 'Best' sites.

(We paid $700something last year in advance, from the old company.)
Can't make it 4 years here in a row, too high for the poor ole Ozzman.

We just put a deposit on a site at the county C.G., Isla Blanca.
Our site is tiny, but we have a year to upgrade, you have to contact the county office to see if someone has one available you may want.
It's around $600something there.
Anyone there, or coming next year?????

Yes Don, we are OK this year, but next year is another contract period.

We always used to find a KOA park if we could but gave that up a couple of years ago when they charged us %53.00 a night in Billings, MT. And to add insult on top of it they charged my grandson to come in and pick us up to go out for dinner. We only use KOA as a last resort now. I think that KOA is great for weekend campers with children. They have a lot of things for kids to do but we don't need or use any of their extra's and got tired of paying for it.

Well, as they changed Internet providers it is a pain in the keester to get on now, it drops me all the time, and I am purty upset. I imagine they did it to save $4.00 a month. Dummies............
I shall burn my KOA card and do a little dance around it, if prompted just a little.

One reason we stay away from KOA, big corporation and charge for every little thing! Use TL Dir and find nice mom & pop places also. Not always internet but we are never in one spot that long.

KOA say they are North Americas family campgrounds. They way they charge you almost have to take out a second mortgage.

Ozz, I agree, I think that KOA is awful proud of their CGs. They certainly don't promote RVing (IMHO) You join their "club" and get 10% off there already high prices - woopie.

Helen--that KOA in Billings was the one that was running a chicken BBQ business on the side when we were there in '04. They were more interested in selling the fowl than in getting us a spot that the rig would fit in. After three tries we got our money back and went on to Butte. We stayed there for $30 less.

Dumped KOA over a year ago. Will only use a KOA as a last resort (no punn intended).

NO KOA for this kid, last experience I had with them, I was transporting a 32 foot travel trailer from Fort Myers, Florida. Called ahead told them I was by myself tired and just wanted the cheapest spot they could give me for 3 4 hours of sleep. Cost me 72.00 dollars, that was the last money I will ever pay a KOA..... Of Course I am now and MOC FAMILY member so I suppose I could really pull into any one of my Family's back yards for a hand shake and a cup of coffee, what do you think?????? I am headed at this moment to the RGV, OZZ, you might want to meet up with me. I heard that there was really CHEAP PROPERTY across a small river down there, a guy could buy a acre for about a 100 dollar bill, right on the south side of this river and they will throw in a donkey...Deed's in spanish.
OK, time to go to bed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

KOA is one of those things that you DON'T get what you pay for. They are some of the country's worst campgrounds and most are not well taken care of. Their locations are usually right next to the Interstates/railroads/truck stops w/diesels running all night. We've never been happy with them and WILL NOT use them, even as a last resort (as Glenn said, "no pun intended.").

Our experience with KOA has been different. Agree.. They are over priced and we only use them "as a last resort" however we have only had One bad experience with a KOA. We stayed in KOA's in Indiana, Missouri and Oklahoma on our trip down to Az because they were the only ones open all year around in the cold states. I see them as the "Holiday inn" of C.G's..you know what to expect when you pull in..in most cases.

Last October, we stayed in a KOA just east of Portland ,OR - right on the mainline for the Union Pacific. All night long the horns were blowing.

We have a KOA in Greenacres, WA - right on a Union Pacific train track with trains several times a day.

There is at least one very nice KOA that you get what you pat for. the Great Smokey Mountain KOA, or better know as KOA of Cherokee, NC. Very Nice place, most all pull thrus up to 90 feet long with concrete pads and patios on all of them, 2 large swimming pools, kiddy pool, outside hot tub, inside hot tub, inside pool to name few things. Right on creek that runs behind the campground, 5 large trout ponds out front. Nice camp ground, little pricey at $65.00 per night but you get what you pay for here plus WiFi.

I think we would need about 5 of those 9 foot long sites to park our Tana. Let's see... at $65 each it would only cost us $325.00 a night. Piece a cake. Maybe they will give us a break if we stayed for a week.

Our very first trip was from white city Ks to Colorado Springs Co 2 Jan 04 at 2AM pulled into a KOA on Hwy 25 late night check in but we had called ahead to stay for a month $365.00 so we stayed while we looked for another,Noise fron the Hwy and the propane was $2.50 a pound. Feb they came and told us the rate in march will be $650.00 for the summer so we rapidly found a wonderful MOM & POP in Fountian CO for $300. and it is an adult private park w/only 10 RV's quiet and nice. Say no to KOA and drugs LOL.
