Dang! that 50 Amp cable is heavy!

I don't know about you guys but I really get tired of hooking up and un-hooking the 50 amp marine cable from the RV when I reallly don't need 50 amps. Does anyone know of a source for an adapter that will go directly from the 50 amp marine connection on the trailer to a 30 amp extension cord? Adios y'all.

Snakebitjones,
You can get a 50-30 amp adapter at any of your rv dealerships or Camping World.

I made up my own 50/30 25' cord. but the following looks good and it is cheaper than what I paid just for the parts.

Our 50 amp cord has a nice place of its own in the garage. The 30 amp cord and adapter will be the best money you ever spent.

Well, I need the 50 amps. So I don't see any way around hauling that serpant. At some point, and after much cogitation, I may try to install some sort of reel or sleave under Monty. Since the 50 amp is a 220 line split, maybe making a split-plug cheater for each end and run two 30 amp cords to get the 50 amps. Just thinkin', but I'll bet a real electrician could come up with a contraption to accomplish the task.

You can get the 50 to 30 pigtail TWISTY on adaptor at most any Rv supply store.I got one at our local RV dealer for 59.95. We already had a 30 amp extension from or previous RV. Most of the local CG we go to have only 30 amp service but we are having 50 amp service installed here at the house. If you do not have a 30 extension cord the one sugested by John would be a good buy..

We rarely use the 50, as many have stated, a lot of the places we visit only have 30. The 50 stays under the bed, curled along the side of the storage area there, takes up little room, and is only carted out when we are parked somewhere for a LONG time, like when we go south for the winter. Carry it out once a year and back in once a year. Sure, 50 is great, I can run all kinds of great things, but, it is too heavy, too cumbersome and we are lazy. So, we make do with 30 most of the time, but keep the 50 onboard, just in case.

If you know how to use a cheater, you can get 50 amps out of two 30 amp plugs. A cheater is a 50 amp connector with two thirty amp connectors coming out the other side. Works like a TV or phone splitter,

Here's a link to the "cheater" described by Stiles at the retailer that John recommended. So, the question is, "use a 30 amp cord, which is easier and lighter than the 50 amp cord, or turn any park with two 30 amp outlets (or a 30 and a 20 amp outlet) into 50 amp service and keep the ananconda?"

Yes, Lije, That is exactly the type gizmo I am suggesting. However, what I want is a short splitter to attach to Monty and another male plug splitter to attach to a 50 amp source. Then one could use two 30 amp cords between. Of course, with the splitter connected directly to the Monty, the two 30 amp cords could be connected to the 20/30 amp sources to get the "cheater" effect. If this worked, then the anaconda would be replaced by two more manageable 30 amp cords.

Hey Rich & Helen - nice looking trailer you have there.

Yes, the 50 amp cable is heavy, but it is more manageable with a suggestion from somebody here to take a milk crate, cut a hole in a side near the bottom, snake the trailer side plug out a few feet, and coil up the rest of the cable in the crate. Now all you have to do is pick up the crate, set it beside the connector and hook into the triler. Then uncoil just the cord you need and plug into the stanchion. It's much easier that way.

Hey guys, I have a partial solution to the 50amp. shore line. At wally world buy a plastic cutting board that measures 1/2 X 11 X 14 as well as a metal water hose hanger,(cheap one) plus two flat metal hooks that will fit over the rung of the rear ladder. Mount the hooks on one side of the board, the hose hanger on the other and hang it on the rear ladder, plug in your shore line to your trailer and leave just a little slack, then hang your shore line on the hose rack letting it hang down about 12- 15 inches. When you need to connect to shore power, hang the entire thing on the ladder, connect to your trailer, and then just enough off the other end to reach the shore hook-up. You can let it lay on the ground if you want, but I usually am close enough to the pole that I don't let it touch the ground. its easy to wipe off if it does and easy to transport back to the storage area. I also installed some kooks in the storage area to hang the board to as well. A couple of straps will keep it all together. Its at least in a neat bundle, but no lighter.

Will use of the cheater overcome weak voltage? IOW, if the 30 amp service shows low voltage when the AC is running, would changing the current to 50 amp from the same box create a higher voltage? (I'm not an electrician and I don't play one on TV.)

Snakebit, I've been using the adapter from CW with my 30 amp extension cord for years. The 50 amp cord stays in the basement storage 95 percent of the time.

I use the 50 amp cord when we winter in Kansas City for one reason only. Sometimes the park's breaker is weak enough it will be the first breaker to trip. When it is zero degrees with 12 inches of snow on the ground, I do not want to go outside to reset the breaker. By using the 50 amp cord, the outside 50 amp breaker is not likely to be the one to trip and I can do the reset without getting out of the comfortable inside of our Montana. I'll tell you, though, that 50 amp cord is a bear to get coiled back up into the laundry basket in the early days of January. Sometimes it gets tossed into the bed of the truck to be dealt with when we reach warmer weather.

Lije Baley, I don't really know the answer to your question but would think it would make no difference unless the problem is with the 30 amp connections at the park's post and not with their overall system. If you are having voltage problems I highly recommend the autoformer. It is pricey but worth every penny as far as I am concerned.
