East side or west side?

Last week when we were visiting with the Riegles, even with all the accumulated brain power, we couldn't remember if you experienced travelers recommend driving up the west side or east side of Flathead Lake. We thought that someone (Hamrad?) had written that the west side was most traveled but they recommended the east side. Any thoughts?

We were in that area last year. We traveled about half of the west side up to Glacier and coming back we took the we east side. The west side has a much bigger and nicer road but is much more heavily traveled. The east side is 2 lane the entire distance of the lake but is less heavily traveled and very scenic. You can't lose either side you take!

By the time we reached this area we were starting to run into "time" problems so we did not stop anywhere along the lake. Next time we will.

Have fun.

Thank you, Hamrad. Steve and I thought that we remembered your previous description along those lines. I think we'll plan on driving the east, less trafficked side. Our campground reservation is located north of Kalispell.

Dennis, is the east side much more pretty, a little more pretty, somewhat more pretty? Shoot, we'll probably just take one side going up and the other coming back down. I'll have to check the maps for which to take going which way. Thanks.

But the REAL question....how many ice cream shops on the east side and how many ice cream shops on the west side?

Hi Steve,
Well it is a very subjective judgment. I think the east side is "slightly" more scenic. I think your idea of up one side and down the other is a good idea.

Either way you'll enjoy it. Don't know about the ice cream... I suspect if you stop anywhere along the road you'll find some. :-)

If the routing for getting to Glacier and leaving there for Yellowstone doesn't take us on both sides of the lake we'll probably do a day trip down there anyhow!

Thanks.

Steve if you use Hwy 93 be on the lookout for a spring running out of the mtn., there is a big place to pull over. It'll be on the east side of the road with the river on the west side. Theres also a RR running along the river with a tunnel. I forget how far south of Glacier it is but its the most wonderful water. Have some jugs ready.

Great info, jsmitfl, thanks! We love seeing that kind of thing along the road and do pullovers a lot. The water sounds terrific, too! Haven't looked at our route for awhile but I think we're on 93 from clear down in southern Idaho (will have to doublecheck that).
