Follow Up of Keystone approach to the step recall

I had my recall done on my steps. Less than 2 months after that the top rivet broke as my wife was stepping out. Head dive. Took pictures of steps, rivets, and skinned up knee,arm and head, Sent them to Camping World who did the work. The wanted the rivet, told them my attorney had it and they could contact him. Had a new step ordered and installed wlithin 3 days.
Different type but still not that great. Had a tech tell me that they had replaced about 25 in the last 6 months. Quality. I am just glad she did not get hurt worse.

There are no rivets left at all on the front steps, all the rivets were replaced with the bolts. I have told Keystone and Camping World I expect the rear steps to be fixed in the exact same manner. I do recall that some other problems were reported that involved the steps actually breaking away from the frame at the welds?? I will be doing a close inspection next week at Myrtle Beach and if additional support with bolts on the step assemblies themselves are needed, I will do that work myself. I actually like the step design and am satisfied so far with the front step repairs, but the engineer in me will not rest until I know that they are completely safe.

I had my recall done at the dealer. They replaced just a couple of rivets. After reading this thread I will replace all of the rivets and replace with hardened bolts and nuts.

Consider the Torklift Glowstep Revolution? A bit spendy at $500 but a quality product that adjusts to the various slopes and angles. Put one on out 2008 Montana 3485. completely eliminates the wiggle when going in or out of the RV using the stock steps.

We never could get ours fixed. Scheduled service at dealer and they claimed to have the wrong recall kit. They agreed to send it to me but then claimed later that "it wasn't allowed" for the customer to install the kit. We only use the steps while traveling due to having the metal porch/step assembly. I will fix them myself in the future.

It seems it would be cheaper for them to send a mobile tech around to fix these in some situations.

Our dealer is about 80 mile from us and they sent one of their 4 mobile techs right to our driveway to repair. Guess we are pretty lucky our dealer has a road service team that covers a 500 kilometer radius of their dealership.

Guess that's why we keep buying from them and yes we do pay a little more when dealing with them.Rrepairs for the most part are no hassle and most can be done at our seasonal lot.

I called NTHSA about the recall and they filled a claim for me and Keystone called me the next day. That's the fast way to get help. They also mailed me the kit to fix the steps myself. However, since a dealer didn't do it, it's not in their records as done. SO I still get letters saying to go have this done. I called my dealer to see if they could clear the entry in the database. The dealer tried to fix it when Keystone was sending out defective non-locking nuts.

When at the National Rally, MorRyde had a sale on their fixed/removable steps and I bought those. Easy to remove and carrying the in bed of the truck and easy to setup when camping.

At the fall rally, made an appointment at Keystone for some including the step recall. Keystone replaced the stairs with new ones.

One bit of advice on repairing the steps yourself. If you use a bolt and the bolt threads are in the hole of the step, The treads will act as a reamer and wear the hole egg shape. It would be best to use a steel rivit or a bolt with an unthreaded portion even if you have to use spacers or washers to get it close to tight. Don't tighten too much. maybe not that big of a issue but something to think about.

I don't have a truck yet so I've not had mine repaired. But then, I also don't use the stairs since I use a ramp due to family mobility issues.

What size rivits does it take? I should be able to drill them (all) out and replace them myself.

Dealer installed new stairs from Lippert on my rig. Problem is the top step is 1 1/2 inches lower from the rig than the original stairs were. Doesn't sound like a big deal, but for my wife with a bad hip, it is. Trying to figure out a solution to this. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I just bought a set of these & will install them before we go out again.
The original steps have become too wobbly and flex more than I can tolerate.

The recall is listed on the Keystone Montana web-site which shows the affected VIN numbers. It is only for the four step models.

HHMMm~ have the 4 step unit on my High Country. Did not find the recall on either the Montana or HC page.
