brake controllers timed v proportional - Montana Owners Club

I currently use a Drawtite activatorII controller(timed) and I can never get full controll of my tana, not to the point of being unsafe, just can't seem to dial in in the same twice. Thinking about changing to a proportional controler(Prodigy) but fear they all have their own quirks. Any advice would be welcomed. Steve

When we bought our Monty, we upgraded to a Prodigy and fell in love with it @ the first stop light. I've not had any problems with it. I like the fact that it reduces the voltage when you are at a stop.

We've been using the Prodigy as well, and are extremely satisfied with it in all respects. Here's a link to an RV accessory site that I was just on that had a great price on it. I haven't ordered anything from them so I don't know anything about them.

The brakesmart(hydraulic) looks promising as well but does look challenging to install. Steve

I've used several different controllers in all my years of RVing but the Prodigy has proven to me to be the best; at least it is for me.

I had a Prodigy in the Ford and had no problems with it ever, it worked very well, so I upgraded to the P-3 on the new truck. I havent got to use it yet because I dont have 1 K on it yet for a pull. but I have heard no bad reports on the P-3 yet, so we'll see.

I run the Tekonsha Voyager and have been happy with it. If I ever need to replace the controller, I would probably go with the Prodigy due to the overwhelming satisfaction of them here.

I upgraded from a Tekonsha Voyager to the Prodigy and never looked back. (If anyone wants a Voyager, it is here collecting dust, let me know.) It may depend on or your exact set-up and rig, but I could never seem to get the Voyager to work consistantly to my satisfacton. (Sorry to disagree with Montana Sky, but as long as you are getting the performace you want out of your Voyager, I guess that is all that matters.)

My Voyager is now wired to serve as my brake tester (created a tether to connect to trailer plug)

Prodigy works better no need to readjust braking between highway and slow speed in campground

I have the Brake Smart and installed it my self. Was easy if you are inclined to do that kind of work. I really like mine and once set at install I have not done any setting again. I know others out there have other kinds and like them so this is not a post that mine is better then yours. Any questions PM me and I will answer if possible.

Just for one more opinion. I used the Voyager on my previous, much smaller Keystone, and it worked fine. Just bringing the 'tana home 200 miles convinced me next time I am down in Albuquerque, I am going to pick up the P-3. The approx. 5k more weight kicking me in the butt made for an eye opening experience.

On edit, I did get the P3, and took a run around the area to get it set for the Montana. Wow, what a difference. I love this controler. One more Voyager for giveaway wired for a GM product. BTW, the plug and play for the P3 was a breeze to install, even got to use the old bracket so no new holes.

I don't believe the Prodigy has any quirks and it has a lifetime warranty from a good company

I got the new P-3 on line for the price that the Prodigy was going for at camping world about 125.00on line, I replace the prodigy with the P-3, easy as pie to install I bought the already made up plug for the truck to controler, the hardist part was mounting the darn thing in a spot I was comfortable with. the only down side of the P-3 is trying to read the screen in the daytime it needs to be brighter for me and my ageing eyes.

Edit : If interrested, here is where I got my P-3 controler it looks like it went up about 4 or 5 dollars sence I got mine.

I use the Prodigy and use the same settings all the time with no problems. Love it, proportional is the only way to go in my opinion.

Update, I just rec'd my P-3 today ($117 from ebay, new). bought my Dodge Ram cable from Tweety @15. Now all I need to do is install, setup, and go camping. Any tips for setup? Steve

Follow the instructions! Read them first, THEN install it. LOL.

When I had my Prodigy, I read the instructions to get an idea what to expect. In my case it was a "plug and play" into my 2004 Ford F-250. There was a connector to plug it into and I found a good place to mount it. It worked great from the start for the two years I towed my TT. When I upgraded to the Monty I traded it in for my 2006 Ford that came with an intregrated unit (made by Prodigy).

I hope it all goes smooth and you learn to love your Prodigy like the rest of us.
