Charge Converter

Has anyone had their battery cooked by the charge converter? Is it possible? What about the truck cooking the battery, possible?

To prevent that from happening, my charger in the converter has a step-down controller on the converter. It senses the need changes accordingly.

Mike, do you know what converter you have? The one in our 2010 is a 80 amp Xantrex multistage. If you don't have a multistage it is very possible to boil all the water out and kill the battery as it continues to charge the Battery even when fully charged. Happened with our first TT because we didn't know any better having only had tents and pop-up prior.

yes, converter malfunction can kill a battery. Continous requirement to add wate to the battery cells is first indicator.

you do need to keep an eye on the water. they will slowly lose water due to the almost constant charge. and after you expose the plates they will get hot and warp. A monthly check at first will give you an idea of how often to check it. maybe only once a season after.

On the truck issue,it should not overcharge your camper battery. they are regulated to adjust the charge

I use 2 deep cycle marine batteries . They are better suited for the kind of abuse we give them in our coaches. I have had a lot of success with them over the years. Your conv/charger should maintain them well. Most failed or "cooked" batteries are due to low water or shorted plates. Just keeps regular check on them and you should be OK. If you are boiling a batt. , it most likely has a dead cell. Larry

Hey Mike, the converter can cook a battery if it fails! As was said earlier, it can also be a low level of liquid in the battery to cause it to cook too. If you get another converter, make sure you get one with a "Wizard" on it!

Thanks for all the good information. Just trying to relax my battery paranoia. In response to the questions:
I have the 80amp Xantrex.
I just installed two 12's hence the paaranoia.
I check the water frequently.
Sorry Ron, will miss the GREAT Central Plains Rally this year. We will be doing Durango Co this summer. Not going below 6k altitude until late Sep.
