Covered Bridge Festival

The atmosphere at Fallen Rocke Parke Campground has been greatly improved with the presence of two lovely Montanas. Bill and Helen (Adelmoll) have arrived and stopped by this afternoon. We're here for a week. The fall colors are beautiful. There are garage/barn/yards sales all over the countryside as well as one of the hugest flea markets we've ever seen. And in our spare time we hope to get around to see some of the covered bridges. There are only 2 million people in attendance so you can imagine what the traffic is like. But it's worth it.

Wow, this is quite a place. What could be better? Good friends and wonderful things to do. I am so glad we are here.

Oh, I can smell the chicken cooking in Rockville square or the cornbread and beans. Do they still cook the beef underground at Billie Creek? Roy and I spent many happy October weekends at the Covered Bridge Festival. His family owned land Raccoon Lake was built on and his parents lived in Montezuma when they retired. We look forward to retirement and visiting family that way and hopefully get to attend another festival.

Nancy, I think Roy's family should have kept a little land for you guys around Raccoon Lake. We stayed in the state park a couple of years ago and it was beautiful. We were so busy at the flea markets in Bridgeton and Madisonville while we were here that we didn't even go to Bille Creek Village this time but it's a great place to visit.

Did you know that an unstable person burned the Bridgeton Covered Bridge two years ago? But it has been beautifully rebuilt. It's the long bridge right by the beautiful mill and so picturesque.

We just had a lovely breakfast with Bill and Helen (Adelmoll). It's soooo much fun seeing old friends. After we're done here at the laundromat, we may get ready to pull out as rain is forecasted for tonight and we might just want to move out before we get stuck in a mudbath. Might have to cancel our Mexican Train session for tonight.

Next stop, Bloomington, Indiana.

Actually, Roy's parents did have a bit of property by the lake with a trailer on it, and we would spend weekends there. We lived up in the NW part of the state near Hammond. They sold it when they retired and we have not been back there since his mother died almost 20 years ago. We enjoyed that part of the state but I did not like the NW part. I worked in Chicago and I cannot imagine being that cold ever again.

No, I did not know about the bridge, but Bridgeton and the mill were always a part of our Covered Bridge Festival activities.

Enjoy your travels. It is a nice time of year to be there.

Nancy, we did make it to Billie Creek yesterday. What a delightful place. They now charge you to get inside and see the bridges. They are not part of the tour today. We did not find any beef cooking underground though.

This year was the 50th Anniversery of the festival. It was fantastic.

They only cooked the beef on Saturday of the festival weekend when we were attending in the '70's. I think it is interesting that what Roy and I remember most is the food! Ha Ha.

I have enjoyed reading about those of you fortunate enough to be there. We are anxious to begin traveling outside our area of the northwest and back to the midwest and New England (I grew up in Mass).

Happy travels. Nancy
