2007 Guide to Towing

The January Edition of Trailer Life Magazine contains the 2007 Guide to towing. It rates all the T.V.'s and also contains some very good information about selecting a T.V.

If you do not subscribe I recommend you pick up a copy.

There is lots of good information in that guide, but it fails to tell the other half of the towing equation when talking about 5ers. The guide will tell you what each vehicle will tow, but does not mention cargo capacity. Anybody that knows anything about trucks knows a diesel will tow the majority of 5ers. However, lots of knowledgeable truck folks are not familiar with the requirements for cargo capacity.

But, as Bert said, the "tow rating/capacity" can be very misleading, and perhaps not very meaningful. GCWR, GRW, GAWR are the real numbers to be concerned with.

For the benefit of Bert (CAT320), The door post on the truck in my profile say I can have 4750 lbs on steering & 6010 on the drive. That totals 10760 lbs. When I exceed THAT weight, I'll start worrying. As it sits in the pic, it weighs: steer, 4200, drive 5300. Pin weight is about 2450 ready for the road. Nothing be the least concerned about. Gross weight is 18450, 1500 less than theoretically allowed. I have no idea what the pin weight on the Studebaker shown is, but I'd bet it about 6000 lbs. And on single rear wheels with probably 8.25X20 tires that used cotton or rayon cord. And a Hercules engine with about 90HP.

Thanks for the post, Bob. However, IMHO, you are misreading what the numbers are telling you. The max axle weights listed cannot be combined to get the GVWR for your truck. Those two numbers, when combined, will be above the GVWR. They are listed so you can be flexible in loading...up to the max listed for each particular axle, but when combined, should be no more than the GVWR. You should have two separate stickers...on my truck the GVWR, etc, is on the back edge of the driver's door; the Tire and Loading sticker, including cargo capacity, is on the pillar, driver's side between the front and rear doors. Subtract 9500 from your GVWR and you'll know how much over you are.
