Hot Water Heater ( Electric part )

Is there a way to do a check on the heater, the electric part of the water heater element, it seemed to have a problem with heating the 10 gals good and hot, the wife ran out of hot water and that has never happened before.
also how hard is it to change out the element with a new one if this one is bad.
any feedback is welcome.

Thanks don

Good question Don. I'm having the same problem. I just tested mine by having it on for an hour and registered temp is only 62. I can't figure out where to test it or even pull the heating element.

Don it's easy just pull the cover and in the bottom there is a small cover take it off and you will need a 1and1/4" [I think] thin wall socket they make a wh element socket cheap where you get the element. you will have to get a 1500 watt I could not find a 1440 like the one in it. Just make sure to unplug the power and take off the wires and screw out the old and replace use some teflon tape. I removed the gas tube it was in front of the element. you can ck the old one with a meter. most of the time you can see where it is burned almost in too.

THANKS Bobby, where did you buy the element? was it a reputable RV store, or do I have to go through my autherised dealer( I hope not there )1500 watts is ok with me that will cook quicker.

Before you remove the element, you can check to see if it's good. Remove the wires from the element and take a multi-meter set on ohms (continuity)and touch both screws where the wires were. If you have continuity, the element is good. Always disconnect the trailer from power first.

Lowes or Home Depot or any hardware store has the elements. Measure the length or take the old one with you. While I was replacing ours, I also bought one of the wrenches specifically for the elements since I have a hunch I will most likely be replacing it in the future.

The continuity test can be misleading. If the element is in the right position it will melt in such a way as to make an 'almost' short circuit. It happened to me a few years back. I always carry the tools to change it, and a spare element.

It only takes a minute to remove it. I never use Teflon tape on it because it comes with an o-ring, and it may require a good ground. You should only use tape on the anode rod.

Don,
Both sell them, but I think they carry 1500 watt ones. take the old one out, take it with ou and hold them side by side to get the right length. Easy as pie!!

Don.....just pulled mine 3 days ago and picked up a new one at Minards. As said above, Lowes and Home Depot are supposed to carry them. I could only get one @ 1400W. Put it in and works fine. I took in my old one and matched it up.
