Questions for Our Canadian Friends

Going up North to your area next week for our first extended trip with the Monty. Here are my questions: Is Diesel #2 called #2 at gas stations? Why do the websites talks about "licensed dinning"? Are there "rest areas" on your major east and west roads. If so can you nap there with no problems? For example is your HW #17 North of Fort Frances in the Kenora a 4 lane road?

Thanks you

Hi Bob and Nancy,

Up here (out west anyway) Diesel is just Diesel, We don't call it #2. Lots of Stations have it, & some don't.
Diesel, where I live is $ 1.06 litre (can). 3.78 litres = 1 US Gallon.
"licensed dining" just means you can buy alcohol with your meal at a Licensed Restaurant.
We have rest areas along our main highways ( but not near as many as in most States ).
I never (napped)in one, but out West anyway, they look Ok.
I can't help you with HW #17. Never been there.
Hope this helps.

J&D

I wish I could answer your questions better, maybe someone who knows the area you are talking about will come along. All I can tell you is that in Ontario the 400 series highways are equivalent to Interstates and they do have rest areas where you could take a nap. 17 is a main east-west highway, I think you will find rest stops, but we need someone who knows that highway to tell us for sure.

Licensed dining just means that the establishment has a license to serve alcohol with meals.

There is some different designation for diesel in Canada, but whatever they sell at service stations will be equivalent to the US #2. (It may be more doctored up for the cold during winter though).

Hope you enjoy your trip. I've heard good things about that area (NW Ontario), but we are days away from it down here in the extreme south of Ontario.

Out on the West Coast at least the rest stops are just that - NO overnighting - also nowhere near the number of rest areas as your Interstate hwys.

Bob & Nancy

Further to what J & D said diesel in the Okanagan is about the same at $1.06/litre x 3.78 litres per US gal = 4.00 C$ per US gal. At the current exchange rate of approx. 0.91 C$ to 1.00 U$ it will cost you about $3.65 U$ for one US gal. Use your credit card for the best rate of exchange. The credit card company may sting you a bit more for the exchange but at least it will be reasonable. Use your ATM card for Canadian cash as well. The local stores probably won't give you the best rate of exchange if you give them U$.
