Slide supports?

Our former trailer had different kinds of slide-outs than our new Monty. This new trailer has cables. We are not sure how they are supported underneath.

At a rally a few years ago, we asked the Lippert rep if slide supports were needed when parked, and we were told no, they were not.

We are wondering if these slides (in the Monty) need supports if you are parked for an extended period of time, like the 3 - 4 months we are parked in one spot in Florida for the winter. We are concerned about the weight of the recliners especially in the living room slide. The fridge and stove are also a bit heavy, although that slide is not as deep.

Any knowledge out there on this issue?

I believe all new fifth wheel slide out boxes are designed to support the weight

Not recommended for Montana units. As a snowbird I see units requiring re leveling, including mine on occasion, and if slides are jacked potential for stress on the slide frame.

Slide out supports will not help, but can cause damage. We store stuff behind our chairs like three cases of bottled water etc and in 5 years of full timing have never had an issue.

It's a HC all the slides are cable slides. They are not supported under the camper. All the support comes from the cables. 4 cables pull the slides out and 4 pull it in. The drive motors are over the slides and can bee seen from in the camper. When a slide is either in or out it is supported by the floor and the walls. It relies on the strength of the wall and the floor for strength. They don't need any support from under the slides. When my HC is in its shed I leave the slides out within any damage.

I was always concerned that if a tire went down with the slides supported you could end up with major damage.

Thanks for all the input, everyone! It's unanimous then - no slide supports.

I was told (don't know if its true) that you void the warranty if you use supports

Bingo! We've seen it happen. It was in Myrtle Beach a few years ago in the extended stay area of the park we were visiting. The rear tire went flat and ruined the kitchen slide and actually put a tear in the sidewall at the top of the slide.

Why would the slides be out if the landing gear was up? And if the landing gear is down, How could a flat tire damage the slide? Not douting you, but when I pull in to a site I lower landing gear, level coach and then open slides. I don't see how a flat tire could hurt if supported by landing gear.

He is referring to a flat on the Montana not the tow vehicle. His reply makes perfect sense to me.

When we purchased our first ever camper a 2008 Montana 3400RL, the very first thing the PDI guy told me was to NEVER use supports under the slides and then he explained why. This was an older gentleman who had been full timing for years and seemed to know what he was talking about.
