Stock Tailgate vs Others
Thought I had it all figured out last year. Bought a nice "V" tool box for the end of my bed and removed the stock tailgate. It was really nice hooking up and provided great extra storage. But after a year of traveling with it I found three negatives. I think it actually reduced my MPG slightly as compared to just leaving my tailgate on, plus it gave me zero space in the bed of my shortbed for hauling anything while camped in one place for longer periods of time. Also, I really missed having a tailgate to put down and use as a work bench for things. Now I have my stock tailgate back on and really like having the backup camera again. Is there any real benefit for spending the money for a V aftermarket tailgate, except the fact you can hook up without lowering it?

I do not have V gate. I am installing the Power Gate soon. It lowers and raises with push of button. I use my truck as daily driver and prefer a full gate!

Oh oh, not another diamond studded tailgate thread!
Joe, go to the Search Engine here and check out posts on tailgates. You'll see what I just commented on! There have been a few posts on this very subject but one set a record for responses about a year or two ago. I think you'll enjoy it!

Yep, sorry I started this. It sure has been covered and then some. Think I will just stick with the stock gate.

I don't care about any of that stuff. We have the V tailgate on this truck and the last one because I can see into the bed of the truck and the hitch when hooking and unhooking. Convenience...priceless.

We had the stock tailgate. I liked it because when we got to the CG, unhooked, covered the bed with the Extang roll bed cover and closed the tailgate, nobody could tell there was a hitch (or anything else) in the bed.

My guess is that if you are at a Campground with a 5th wheel that it can be safely assumed that the is a hitch in the bed of the truck.

Yup, that's why I did it. Plus my Stromberg has the backup camera mounted into it.

Personal choice, I think, but I prefer having the stock tailgate. But Artemus brought up the idea of the power gate. I might have to put that on my wish list, but will make do for now.

So when my doctor asked if I exercise, I can tell him sure I have a non-power tailgate and I park my dually far away from the store.

True, but when out and about, you can't tell what, if anything is in there.
