Exclamation upgrade to 17 1/2"

I have a 2010 3455SA with 16" wheels. I'm interested in upgrading to 17 1/2" rims but am not sure if that will work with the oem axle set up. Has anyone had experience or changed their wheels to the bigger diameter? I was interested in putting Sailun tires on them.

Several members have done this. Be sure to get the new rims with 1/2" lugs, not 9/16" (they come in both sizes).

Do a Search on "17.5 rims" and you will get some of the discussions. Here is one which gives the best info. Be sure to read it all.

I'm not aware that Sailun makes their ST tires in 17-1/2".

Yes Sailun makes the 17.5 tires 215x75x17.5 and i believe the 225x75x17.5 in load range h which is 16 ply. With the higher capacity tires in 16'' now i don't see any reason to increase to 17.5. I replaced my wheels with Hi-Spec wheels on account of breaking 2 factory wheels and stayed with the 16''. If i had a Mobile Suite 5th wheel then i would have 17.5'' wheels as this is what they come with and they are much heavier.

Correction. The Sailun 17.5 is considered commercial and sells for 26.00 less at Simple Tire than the 235x85x16 tire. These are the tires that some have installed on ther 5th wheels and they are rated at 4805 pounds and the 235x85x16 is rated at 4400 pounds. The biggest cost factor is the wheels as new 17.5 wheels are about 100.00 more per wheel than the 16''. The 17.5 is just not enough bang for the buck.

I think the question would be is the 405 lb per tire worth the investment in new wheels. We are talking 4805 versus 4400.

I have a 2008 3400RL, and would think yours is very close in weight to mine. Mine is 15500 GVWR. I am running the Sailun ST235-85-16 4400 lb. rating at 100 psi. I feel I am well covered in tire rating .

My HC is rated at 15,200 and we never get over 14,300. I'm running the same tires and same psi.

If you have the money spend it. we say, 'if not now, when?'

there is no reason to spend a ton of money for larger tires and rims but what the heck, go for it.

I have a 2011 3455sa with the sailun 235/85/16 G637 tires. No problems what so ever with tires anymore. I see no need to go to the 17.5 set up. If I was you, I would put that $$ towards the real problem, (the junk suspension on these rigs) and get the mor ryde independent suspension installed. This will be my next move.

If you need 17.5 buy them, but individual tire weights of your Montana while hooked to truck will tell you if you need them. Our 2013 3725 has a GVRW of 16,000 and we being minimalist are probably only about 15,000 actual. We weighted fully loaded for travel including full tank of fresh water at MorRyde when getting IS and disc brakes on 09/24/15 as follows: FL 3350, RL 3050, FR 2725, RR 2805. After having our second G614 blowout in two years last week we bought Sailun S637T 235/85 R16 Load Range G rated at 4400 lbs. from Tires-Easy and cost $163 and change each with free shipping. We had them mounted and balanced for $15 each, and put on new metal high pressure stems for $6.95 each. Our Montana rims are 110 lbs psi and the rims are rated at 3950 each.

Although I don't know your circumstances involving the blowouts, but we STILL read about these overpriced ,over rated G614 blowouts. Yet we still keep paying the outrageous prices for those Goodyears, and ignore testimonial after testimonial about the Sailuns, and some even think its a upgrade over Sailun

Good choice on the Sailuns, IMO you made the right choice.

Thanks for sharing your collective wisdom. I guess I best start at what my wheels are spec'd at. Now I'm inclined to stick with the 16" rims but checking the weight at each wheel needs to be done. I've got to learn more about IS. Already put Kodiak disc brakes and Tuson controller on the rig.

Your wheels are most likely 3750# wheels. My sailun tires have taken out 2 factory wheels. The wheels are your weak link and not G rated tires. The sailun 235x85x16 tires will hold 650 pounds more than your wheels.

What Texan said. You might look closely at your rims. I'm betting they are rated 3750# which like he said is well under what the 16" Sailun is rated at. Also another note: Sailun makes a couple of 17.5" tires. A 4805# & a 6005#

G614s are just fine for our trailers. but, sailun tires are quite a bit cheaper.

Recumbent didn't mention that we've both have gone up to alaska and back without any tires issues. we did break springs and a spring hanger. :-)

I made the switch from ST235/80R-16's after 3 tire failures and $3800 dammage to RV. I took the advice from this forum 4 years ago and contacted TrailerTiresandWheels.com. They shipped 4 Goodyear G114's ST215/75R-17.5 mounted and ballanced on 4 machined 17.5 rims. G114's are 135 psi tires which are slightly narrower and shorter than what I had on before. You just have to tell him what size lug nuts you have as he also ships new lug nuts and hub cover. These are re-grovable tires.

17.5" Upgrade Information

If currently running a 235/80R16 or 235/85R16 tire on a 16" 8 lug wheel, you can replace them with 17.5" tires and wheels. Refer to the chart for a size reference.

...............235/80R16....235/85R16....215/75R17.5....235/75R17.5....225/70R19.5....245/70R19.5
Height....30.9"..............30.7"..............30 .5"..................31.4"..................32.1.. ................33.1"
Width......9.4"................9.5"............... .8.8"....................9.2"..................... 9"......................9.9"
*Dimensions will vary by manufacturer
8 lug hubs can have 1/2", 9/16" or 5/8" studs
Wheels for 1/2" or 9/16" studs are stud piloted, wheels for 5/8" studs are hub piloted.
19.5" wheels or for 5/8" studs only

Were your 235x80x16 tires E or G rated. I'm guessing E on account you just don't hear any bad comments about G rated tires except the older G rated Goodyears. Never the less I feel you have much more tire than you need but it's always better to have to much than not enough. Not a bad decision.

E rated. Trailer GVW is 14,000 but I had enough of the E rated tires. And at the time, I was hearing good and bad about G rated. So far I don't regret the change to H.

17.5 Wheels & Tires

I just had MORRyde install 17.5 Wheels and Goodyear G114s on my 2018 Montana 3921FB this past week while at Fall Rally in Goshen, IN. This completes my suspension upgrades as MORRyde installed Independent Suspension (8K) and Kodiak Disc Brakes (electric over hydraulic) in June of this year. Montana pulls and stops so much better now. Very pleased with the entire suspension and wheel and tire combination.

It is counterproductive to install tires with a shorter sidewall and higher pressure as with these 17.5 wheels. Adding such stiffness would necessitate a more active suspension if the goal is ride improvement.
