High Alt Water Heater

I just returned from a trip with a camp site at 8600 feet. I had an intermittent DSI fault light with the gas side of the water heater not lighting. To have hot water I fired up a generator and used the electric element - this is a suburban unit.

I have read in the owners manual there is an adjustment to the water heater that can be made for high altitude operation. Do any of you have any experience with this?

I’ve camped at 9200 feet without a problem. It would be easy to adjust for the altitude. There is a slip tube on the burner. Loosen it and and move it to allow more air to enter the burner.

Thanks Lynwood, I have previous camped in SOB at this altitude without issue. I will give your recommendation a try.

I love camping at high altitude. The morning is cool the days are warm and the nights are cold. My favorite place is Union Pass at Dubois Wy. Where do you camp at 8600 feet.

Ours has always worked fine from our home area of around 600' to our regular visits to an area west of South Fork, CO at about 8,500'. Maybe a little tweak as Lynwood said will get you in that range.

Lynwood, you can also try the top of the bighorns in Wy. I think anywhere from 8500-9200.

Thanks guys. Sounds like nice places. Do a Google search for Union Pass Wy. Sone of the pictures are not Union Pass there are no houses up there except a small housings development but that’s several miles from where you would camp. All of the bronze markers are up there and that is where I camp. And all the small streams are full of trout except the ones they stock. Fish the lakes
especially lake of the woods. If you go, go after the middle of July, snow. September is best all the mosquitoes are gone. Yes mosquitoes are up there Billions of them.

We've been there and many other places from 5k to 11k without any difficulties.

Check your LP pressure at the gas valve. If it is not 11"wc you will have problems lighting at higher altitudes. Will work at lower altitudes OK.

You can adjust the pressure at the change over valve.

Been there, fixed that.
