What kind of solvent?
I have a cast iron plaque with raised letters that has been soaked in motor oil that I want to clean up and paint. Does anyone have a thought on what kind of solvent will remove the oil? The spaces between the letters are quite small. Getting a wire brush into them is difficult, so I am hoping to find something that can lift the oil out without serious scrubbing.
The plaque is made similar to the highway historical markers found in many states, only not nearly that big.
Thanks,
Don

Maybe an automotive degreaser might work. To be most effective, heat the plague before applying the degreaser. The warmer oil is, the easier it flows.

PS: Just saw Mike's suggestion about brake cleaner. If you use that, do NOT use any heat. Some brake cleaners release a highly toxic vapor if heated.

The brake cleaner will help loosen the oil, but do not paint over it without cleaning again with laquer thinner.

My go to solvent, laquer thinner and a natural bristle brush. Also be mindful of your face and eyes...that stuff burns.

Don't know if it will work for sure but the Goop Off may take it off also.

Any machine shop will have the facilities to sand blast it. You have to remove the surface contaminants and provide a good surface for the paint to stick.

You might try TSP cleaner. It is a water soluble degreaser.

I believe I would simply use some dawn on it.
I believe that will cut grease.

Take it outside, spray a little brake/carb cleaner on it, and clean as much as you can.
Then wave a propane torch over it to burn off any residue.
