Post Number

I just realized what was missing on this forum. Each of the postings needs to be numbered. It would be nice if when a posting was made that with each one it was given a posting number. When someone makes reference to a certain posting they can say it was "name of thread" and “posting #42.” Wouldn't that be a nice feature to have?

Yes but I wouldn't want to be the one to try to build that database.

NOT quite the same, but, if you look at threads that contain more than 1 page ----

I want you to look at the URL, here is one from a thread that has 2 pages right now

http://www.montanaowners.com/forums/showthread.php?t=30359&whichpage=2

see the page = 2 thingy at the end???

well, it is sorta the idea!

As Carol mentioned each post has a number and then page number if more than one.
This post number is 30382. http://www.montanaowners.com/forums/...ad.php?t=30382 then the page tag is added with the &whichpage=2 when the second page is added.
Therefore, just the TOPIC_ID=30382 is all the is really needed.
Training members to use it is a different story.
Cheers,

So how do you find the "post number"?

Carl,

Just look in the URL address bar. It is the one right after the "TOPIC_ID=".

I suspect what we have here is a failure to communicate. Bill-N-Donna suggested each posting should be numbered (and exposed to readers). Other forums such a "The Diesel Stop.com" and "The Ford Truck Enthusiasts Forum" number (and display) each post within a topic. I am pretty sure that is what Bill-N-Donna referred to.

ForumCo numbers each topic and this topic ("Post Number") is 30382 (within FORUM_ID 111, but that is another subject). My posting is probably (assuming no one else responds while I compose this - I type very slowly) is number 7 within the "Topic". "Topics" and "Posts" are two different entities in this context

I asked where to find the "post number" based on John's response before I figured out he was equating "Topic" and "'Post". I was surprised to see Dennis' response.

But Dennis, there is nothing in the url after "TOPIC_ID=". Here is the url we see as "the great unwashed masses".

http://www.montanaowners.com/forums/...ad.php?t=30382

Perhaps you see something different?

What we have here is a failure to communicate. So since I know not of which I speak I will not.

I will leave it to someone who can communicate. I obviously don't know how!

I do understand the question from years of experience using various forums. T one point in time I even had my own forum at blacklakeny.com
I now QUOTE my first response....

AND; I sure would not want to pay someone to build that data base.

Actually when I wrote this I was thinking that it may only be a setting that an administrator or someone with a higher authority could simply change with a click of a mouse which would allow it to display in that manor. With the programs that are used today I would guess this to be a possibility.

With our current software we cannot simply "click the mouse" to change such a thing.

You are correct in your assumption! I've seen this on other forums and I think it's a nice feature.

I should clarify that some forums do have this feature already built into the overall programing but many do not. Forumco apparently does not and to me that's just fine. Remember, Forumco owns this forum programing and charges each client, their customer base, a fee to use their forum program. Now if a large percentage of their customer base requested such an upgrade I am sure they would look into it.
BTW-That's not to mean we all email Forumco. The Customer base is not each individual poster but, in this case, is THE Administrator of the MOC. He's the guy paying the bill.

Personally I don't see the need for such a number but that is IMHO.
