Trailer Life RV Action Line

Looks like Montana made the Action Line on page 20 of Trailer Life.

Gray water tank developed a crack and leaked on wiring. Just goes to show you a 1 year warrranty is not enough. Keystone finally paid for the problem.

Wonder it this guy is a forum member.

Tom,

I totally agree - 1 year is not nearly enough. Should be 2 years, bumper-to-bumper, & 5 years on the structure.

Jim,

I never did understand the 1 year warranty. It is just not enough time to shake out problems. Especially if you spend months getting approval.

I agree. And for those of us that still work and live in the cold northeast. The one year warrenty is even smaller. My unit sits un-used for monthes at a time.

I think it is KIA that has a 10 year 100K warranty on their product.Tne Warranty from a manufacturer is a statement as to the confidence they have in the reliability and quality of their product..

Agree with the cold weather regions. 3 months of serviceable time is hardly enough time for manufacturer defects to fully surface.

For those of us who live in the cold weather part of the country.....and buy in the fall/winter we further get impacted by the ridiculous 90 day period for reporting certain type problems. I purchased my unit in November 04 and did not use it until Jan 05 when we went to Texas for the remainder of the winter. When I called keystone customer service about a slide adjustment problem - the first question they asked was I within the 90 day warranty period.

I have communicated this unfair 90 day issue with keystone but have seen no change in their policy....I would not buy another unit in the fall while living in the East and not being able to use it immediately.

A 1yr. warranty on a product that cost $50,000 or more is behind the times. I can see the time comeing when we can buy a trailer made by some foreign company with a 3 to 5 yr warranty. Look what happned to the US car companies with the competition putting the warranty squeeze on them. The rv industry has the same mind set,"We have been doing it this way for 30yrs, why change now."

My last RV which was an Okanagan had a five year structural warranty but you had to take it back to a dealer once a year for an inspection. This was tranferrable to the next owner, but there is no free lunch. An Okanagan Fifth wheel costs a lot more than a Montana and I think the Montana is a far superior unit in spite of it's weaker warranty.

As far as appliances, I purchased a 5 year warranty that covers every appliance that was in the coach at delivery time. It was fairly reasonable when you compare it to what Dometic wants just for the fridge extended warranty.

My memory is failing me. I know there is a one-year warranty on most of the structural components but the frame has a 5-year warranty, the roof membrane a 15 or 20-year warranty (not sure which), and most of the appliances have a 3-year warranty from their manufacturers. Three years on the toilet, too. But it's the structural part other than those components mentioned above that have just a 1-year warranty, right?

Also, I think the 90-days for "minor adjustments", like slide adjustments, should be from first use and not from date of sale. However, I don't know how they'd know when that first use took place. Maybe this should just be one year from date of sale. Or six months. Just some random thougts.

See another Montana or Mountaineer on the road? Flash lights twice, it might be one of us!

I have not waded through the mounds of paperwork to check all the various warranties, but Keystone's is one year...with several pages of 'owner responsibilities, dealer responsibilities, Keystone responsibilites, exclusions, disclaimers, inspections, obligations, and probably more. I am not a believer in extended warranties...never had one on a car. However, we did opt for one with the 3400. The contract price for the extended warranty is based on the selling price (what you paid for it). Our warranty is bumper to bumper, seven years, $100 deductable for less than $20 a month...we paid in a lump sum. I figure in seven years, something will break, quit working, fall apart or just plain die. After looking at the price of Dometic A/Cs, refrig's, etc...I figure I'll get my money back one way or another.

We are doing the same thing Cat20 has done. and ..Honda/ Toyota campers..it will happen..sooner than later and the American Rv industry will follow the American auto indusry into ruin .What's worse is the RV industry has learned no lesson from the failing auto industry...how sad..

There is something to be said about warranties. Why do we have to have a computer list of when this warranty expires and when the next one expires. Why don't the manufacturers of these rigs just step up to the plate and give us decent coverage that includes ALL the unit, from ties to roof. If they build better units and put better parts and appliances in them they will have a much happier bunch of owners. Next question is, could we afford them??

First of all like Cat320, I knew the duration of the warranties when I "bought" my Montana and therefore I immediately opted for the extended warranty.

Secondly, Before you purchased your rig you all should have done your homework concerning the duration of the warranties. If you did so than I don't understand your problems. If not it ain't Keystone's fault.

Third...Like Tom said, "Keystone finally paid for the problem." And we have seen that happen many many times in the past.

I am also not believer of the extended warranties, but my last trailer came with an extended warranty
given by the dealer. After two and a half years my fridge quit and they replaced it for free. That's
why I decided to get the warranty for my Monty, because it is more complex trailer with the sildeouts
and more other components which can eventually break. My warranty is for seven years after the mfg.
warranty expires and covers bumper to bumper with no deductible.

Warranty's are like insurance policies. You don't miss it until you need it. Its the pay me now or pay me later approach. Never the less, the detail is in the fine print and it is not easy to wade through all the exclusions, terms, etc etc etc. I tend to shy away from most extended warranty plans. However, the more expensive the purchase the more an extended warranty could pay off. You just have to do your homework and figure the cost of the plan against the probability of exceeding that in out of pocket repairs.

When savings interest rates were up a few years ago you could put the money into a savings account a make that your extended warranty program. Kinda like a self insurance plan. If you manage to put enough away before the regular warranties run out you should be able to handle any unexpected expense with little to no cost out of pocket. And if you never need it you haven't lost it to an extended warranty plan.

Just a thought.
