Propane tanks

The 3100RL and most Montana's come with 30lb propane tanks, can they be replaced with a 40lb tanik without any modification, it appears the 40 lb. tanks are 6" taller?

I believe so, we ordered 40 pound tanks for our 2011 3750FL and they work with no modifications required. Hope you have a strong back!!

Just checked my 3100 RL. Entrance door side would not be a problem.
The other side with control valve, might be a problem. It appears to me that the tank would cover the valve and probably be against it.
I assume 40 LB is same dia as 30 LB? Might be able to raise the valve a little to make room. I had wondered about doing the same thing, just never pursued it. It would add another 20 lbs to the front end. We were 22600 lbs truck and 5er last trip.

Should have no problems but you may need to replace the hookup hose/s. My street side hose was to short and I had to almost kink it to connect it so I changed it out for a hose that was about 6 inches longer and now no problems hooking it up at all when I refill. Oh by the way, I was told NOT to put the gasline tape on the hose male connection to the regulator. They said it will shred when putting it back on and pieces will go into the regulator or into the line itself. This came from three different LP suppliers while I was on our winter adventure to the Southwest! Just a little helpful hint when replacing the gas line hoses!

On our 2011 3400, I changed out the passenger's side tank wth a 40 pounder. Could not change out the other one, as the gas piping and regulator was in the way, and it would have taken a lot of modification to change it. So, one 40 and one 30 pound, and we kept the other 30 pound as a backup. Yes, strong back for the 40 pound required!!

Some of the posts make me wonder if our dealer had to do anything to allow for the 40 pound tanks. I did not think so, but need to clarify my statement above since it was my understanding that nothing had to be changed, but I cannot state that with certainty?

On our rig I had to move the regulator over a few inches to make room for the tank. All the existing hoses worked without modification. As noted by Bingo, it is a nice mod, but not for those with weak backs.

On our 2955RL I also had to move the change-over reg a couple of inches and I believe I changed the pig tail also because the OEM one was almost too short for the 30 Lb tank. Those 40 pounders now reside in our SOB.

When I purchased my Monty I kept the two 40# tanks from my SOB and put them in myself, I did not have to move the regulator as it was high enough and to the left enough to work out, it is a tight fit though. I guess like other things on these Monty's it depends on who installed the plumbing.

I installed a second strap to hold the taller bottle in place, the one strap even on a 30# seems to be somewhat short on keeping the bottles from moving.

The bigger bottles are definitely heavier, but the extra propane is worth the extra effort of getting them in.

Good thing I don't full-time or long-time. I have enough trouble lifting a full 30# tank (about 7 gallons of propane). I wish they would call them what they really weigh. The propane might weigh 30# but with the tank they're more like 50#. Then the 40# don't only carry 10 more pounds of propane, there's the extra weight of the metal that increases the size of the tank, too.

Just did on our 2013 3100rl. Had to move the main valve/ regulator, took less than 30 minutes to drill holes and move up and over a bit.

You don't need a Gym membership, just grab a 40 pounder in each hand and exercise.

mhs.... you're gonna need MORE than a 40 pounder. The propane by itself weighs 40 pounds, then there's the metal tank and metal valves that add more weight. Even an empty propane tank can be much heavier than a dumbbell.
