Road Condition I10 in Louisianna
Anybody have any information on the condition of I 10 in LA??
We are heading West and have heard we should avoid I 10,a search revealed this was true in '06 but what about now....any improvement on this stretch of I10?
As always, your help is most appreciated.
thanks, Betty

We just talked to a camper that arrived at the campground where we are. He just came across I-10 from San Antonio, Texas and was complaining about I-10 in Louisiana. He said it was terrible.

We traveled it a month ago. It is not a good road. Lots of large dips in the surface of the road. Not a lot of pot holes, but lots of bounce!

Unless you are specifically going to New Orleans, you should take I-12 near Slidell, LA on any trip West (or East, for that matter) which will rejoin I-10 near Baton Rouge.

Again, I agree with Parde.. But if you have never visited New Orleans, it is worth all the bumps just to spend a few days in a very interesting city.

We traveled I12 from Hammond (I10) to Tucson in February. I can't remember any really bad sections in Louisiana. Now I40 in Arkansas between Little Rock and Memphis, I remember that section coming back from Tucson!

Hi
My wife and I drove from Florida to San Antonio last summer I10 to I12 to I10 and we didn’t find any bad roads. How ever I agree with navybanker and avoid I40 thru Arkansas.

We drove it west in early January and it was fine. Last year it was a bit worse. I agree about I 40 in Arkansas. I 20 near Shreveport is pretty bad too.

When we traveled it last year it was fine. Some construction, but nothing threatening the RV. As stated, be very careful if you decide to go into New Orleans. When we took the Monty in on the East side on I-10 it was a roller coaster ride. I think the trailer wheels came off the pavement a few times and it made me slow down to 25 mph. Terrible see sawwwwww. The West side I-10 outbound was good. I have not been in-bound on the West side.
My question would be "has anyone taken the Pontchartrain bridge across to get into NO?"
Also, last year there was some heavy construction and a bad part of I-10 inside the border between the border and Orange, TX. Hopefully that has been cleaned up now. The rest of I-10 through to San Antonio is very good.
Happy trails.

UPDATE:
Ok, after much mulling of the situation, and taking all your input and talking to folks from LA at the campground in AL....we decided to try the I10 to I12 route and I must honestly say......it might be an okay road in a Cadillac Escalade but pulling a 5er was not pleasant!!!!!! After spending the night in Abbeville, LA we heading for Shreveport on Rte 49 and not a heck of lot better unfortunately.
When we crossed the border of Texas it reminded us of trips to NH (great roads) from MA (horrible roads), you always knew when you cross into NH......now I can understand the bad roads in MA (winter, snow, ice, frost, etc...) but LA doesn't have all those things to deal with so what's the problem?
So I guess I will forego any future adventures to LA til they have repaved their roads!
thanks for listening!

It has been about 1 1/2 years since we traveled that route...nearly lost our windshield vicinity of New Orleans...do not know if someone lobbed rock at us or what (no vehicle close enough to account for a rock the size that hit us), but it was not a happy experience. Otherwise, can't say I 10 was any worse than most other highways we have been on.

We've been over that road so many times inthe last 20 years I've lost count. I12 is much better than I10 through NO and shorter too. Hope they have the rebuilding done in Beumont, TX, hardly wide enough lanes for a pickup let alone a trailer.
If you want a rough Interstate, try I70 eastbound through Vail to Denver. Ouch!!
This theory about northern states having bad roads because of the winters? WY, MT, ND, MN have some of the coldest worst winters, yet their roads are great compared to the NE states. And they do it with way less people to get taxes out of.

I would have to agree with northern roads being in better shape than NE roads....especially true of TAXachusetts where I am from....which my comment regarding the roads in NH small state, small tax base vs MA bad roads high taxes........Currently in NM and they have good roads.
Kind of thing that makes say hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm????
