6.7 Radiator

A few days ago we were pulling some pretty steep grades in 104 degree heat (Arizona heading into California). The temp gauge for the engine went a little over half way and the transmission temp gauge never went over half way. Later that day I got a message on the dash that said "check engine coolant additive". I waited until the next morning and sure enough the little plastic reserve overflow on the left side of the engine compartment was low. Poured in some orange antifreeze to the full mark, reset message light and all was good. Three days later I checked reserve overflow (engine cold) and it was again low. Only took about two little water bottles full and the "check engine coolant additive" light never did come on. Had lower radiator hose replaced at 35,000 miles and I have heard that Ford has had issues with these radiators. No leaking can be detected nor can I smell antifreeze. Anyone else have to have their radiator replaced on a 6.7 and is this how is started?

This is a "normal" maintenance message. Look in your Ford F350 Diesel Supplement manual around page 48 or 49 (depending on year). The message occurs about every 15,000 miles. They want you to have the coolant tested, at the dealer of course, to ensure the PH level is still within range. My dealer says they don't even bother until you are close to 50K miles.

From the Supplement manual:

Coolant additives

At specific mileage intervals of 15,000 miles (24,000 km), as listed in the scheduled maintenance information chapter, the coolant additive should be checked. The optional message center, if equipped, will also display the message CHECK COOLANT ADDITIVE at this time. The purpose of checking is to verify the correct concentration (freeze point protection) and additive strength (corrosion inhibitor) levels of the coolant for maximum engine performance and protection. Three products are available for ensuring the life and health of the coolant....

You can reset the warning message (for another 15K miles) through the Information Center LCD panel.

Thanks Carl, I reset it in the message center. Just initially concerned because the coolant reservoir was about an inch low. But for all I know when they replaced the bottom hose on my radiator they may have left me a little low. Crossthread, the oil looks fine. Fire5er, I read the link, also have been checking my Ford forum for more information. From info on these sites I think I am okay just keeping an eye on it until reaching the Seattle area.

There was a radiator issue with the 6.4s, but so far, not with the 6.7 according to the powerstroke forum.

The radiator issues with the 6.4 were with the early builds .We have had both the top and bottom hoses leak and replaced.
