Engine ticking

Our truck was kept in the garage all winter while we were in Florida with the exception of being started and driven every two weeks by our friends. When we got back we noticed a screeching like a belt so I sprayed it with belt dressing which helped but did not eliminate it. I than noticed a ticking sound coming from the engine and noticed that the coolant reservoir was empty. I filled it to the max line and it quieted down. Every time I start it now I get a ticking sound which sometimes goes away when the engine is warm and sometimes doesn't.

It is currently sitting at home until we get back from Colorado. When we get home I am going to take it to the Cummins dealer rather than the Dodge dealer. Is there anyone who might have a suggestion as to what I is? FYI, the oil is fine.

It almost sounds like a bearing ticking, so if the seal failed on the pump and coolant got into the bearing, that could explain the loss of coolant, making the coolant pump difficult to turn, explains the belt squeal, and when you applied dressing to the belt, forcing the pump to turn, that might explain the ticking from corroded bearing. I'd bet the coolant pump is bad.

That sounds logical...

I had the same noises and loss of coolant on my 2001 Dodge and it sure sounds like the water pump has gone west.

It is a job one can do themselves if one is mechanical but is a fairly big job.

Good luck

The worst part of changing the water pump is saving the coolant. Cummins is cheaper than Dodge. Pump in less than 60 bucks at NAPA. Doen my on the side of the road.

If that's the case, this will be the third in 133,000 miles. When we get home I'll take it to Cummins and see if they can determine why.

Assuming as you said you checked the oil and it was not discolored or over full. Perhaps ... the belt was squealing because the battery was low and the alternator was in full bore mode ... the ticking could be a lifter(s) since it has set for a while ... the fluid level ... maybe it was low when you left for the land of the blue hairs and didn't notice it. Run it several miles down the road and see if it returns to it's old self. Sometimes friends don't exactly live up to their duties over the winter ... check mileage???

Oil was changed before we left for Florida and our friends put minimum miles on it. The oil was clean when I checked. The only thing I missed was the coolant being down. When I filled up the overflow it took about a quart while I had it running. It did quiet down but not completely.
