Go Baby Boomers!
Just read an article in the local paper this morning online (Peoria Journal Star) reference RV sales.
It claimed that nationwide RV sales have increased 6.5% this year. It also said that there are 10,000 Baby Boomers turning 65 every day!
That is a huge number that is kind of hard for me to get my head around. A few months ago when we were getting our new Florida Driver's licenses the clerk said that 1,000 folks a day, or a 1,000 folks a week were changing their out-of-state DL's for Florida DL's, I can't remember which.
I drew two conclusions immediately after reading this article. First of all I suspect the values of "gently" used RV's will hold their value and should sell pretty well. Secondly, with more and more retired folks starting to RV, I am guessing that site fees will start to rise at most campgrounds.

That is quite interesting data. Do you think the cheaper fuel costs could also be helping spur the increase in RV buying? I know that it has helped me save quite a bit when dragging the unit down the road. My wife's aunt and uncle got rid of the big pusher when the cost of diesel spiked up between four and five dollars a gallon. Baby boomers end date is 1964 if I rember correctly so we still have a ways to go to get to the end of the boomers :-)

Fuel costs have consistently been $1 a gallon less for us since last year at this time. Haven't seen a rise in CG prices - we use Passport America and military ones mostly and they've stayed pretty much the same. What we HAVE noticed on this trip west is an awful lot of rental Class C's and an increase in smaller bumper pull trailers. With some predicting oil prices down to $20/barrel, I wouldn't be surprised if the increasing number of RVers trend continues.

And those numbers coming into florida is the reason that it has surpassed new york in population. Yep, seeing a big increase in rental rvs on road and also diesel at 2.47 gal really allows for more travel for a segment of us. I believe that the increasing rv sales translates well into more issues with rvs being seen. More users will affect lots of things for us, including more on the highway beating down those less than ideal roads...but it could also mean more highway repairs/re-dos of roads. Remains to be seen. Sounds like RVing in Florida this winter may chase us back to Arizona for the future. Just not that much of a people person.

Baby boomers are people born during the demographic post–World War II baby boom approximately between the years 1946 and 1964. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the term "baby boomer" is also used in a cultural context. Credit: Wikipedia

The problem arising from this increase in boomers (being boomers ourselves) is that RV parks are not keeping up with the numbers of RVs being purchased. Just not enough spaces

Looks like a great investment opportunity, more deluxe parks with extra long spaces.

I totally agree with it being a great investment opportunity. 10 acre piece of land within 5 miles of a major highway/interstate where utilities were available. Erect a small metal pole barn style building. Dig in your utilities for 25 large pull through sites. Start with good solid gravel roads. Doesn't sound that expensive to start.
Depending on land prices, could be done for maybe $300,000 or a little more? I would suspect at $30 a night rates it could return close to $75,000 to $80,000 a year after expenses.

Plenty of empty sites in the TX Rio Grande Valley last winter. Went to Mesa AZ in early March and some parks there were still FULL! Lot more expensive too. I think TX is less "congested" than either FL or AZ, but also not as "ritzy".
