License Plates & Taxes
I have read different articles in RV publications and bits and pieces on this forum reference getting plates and DL's changed over to ND or another state. Being from Illinois and now full-timing/traveling I really don't see an advantage. My annual plate for the Monte is $50.00 and the truck is $109.00. There are no property taxes on RV's nor is there any state income tax on retirement income. If you purchase a RV from a dealer you have to pay sales tax, but if you purchase from a private owner you don't. I know all this must sound strange since Illinois is the most corrupt and broke state of all, but for some reason they haven't "picked" on the RV community yet.
What are some of you paying for registrations in your home states? Is there any personal property taxes levied on your RV? What is the main reason you would switch your registrations and DL's to another state?

We are also full time and "reside" in TN. Truck plate is $27.00 and Monty plate is $14.00 with no property tax on RVs. We have no state income tax but do have to pay sales tax on autos/RVs regardless of who purchased from. Collected when you title/register. We don't plan to change anything.

In Colorado the taxes are 5.6 to 8.2% sales taxes. The plates are about $850. per year on a 1 ton truck worth 45k. The 5th wheel plates run about $1800. All of this is per year reducing a little as the value goes down. Also we have a state income tax.

In Texas around 8.25% sales tax, no state income. 2011 1 ton dually - $68.00, 2011 Monty $122.00 @ year. I would have to move out of Colorado! WOW

I was born and raised in Texas. The food, people, and low taxes are some of the many good things.

I am curious as to what you get for the approx $850.00 on the truck, because you say it reduces as the value goes down, does this price include some insurance coverage as well.
For my 2012 Dodge 3500 here in BC the license is $55.00 and Insurance is approximately $1500.00 per year.
The Monty license is $35.00 and insurance is approximately $650.00 per year.

I own a 01 dodge 1500 gas that cost me about $150 a year for plates. The road building and upkeep is expense in Colorado. Because of that; they get you good. The reson for high plate costs on the Rv is by axle weight. The $850 is for license plates. Each year the price comes down a little as the value decreases. We also pay more for insurance in Colorado compared to South Dakota. I am paying about 40% less for South Dakota insurance compared to Denver.

So it does not get any lighter in weight but has less value so they charge less as it ages. Strange way of doing it, and expensive.

It's actually not strange if you understand what they are doing. The property tax is included in the cost of the tags, at least in Kansas, so as the value goes down the amount they can bill in taxes reduces also.

So if you own an S&B in Kansas and pay property taxes on that land and improvements, do you also pay property tax on the RV as well. Or is the reason you pay property taxes on the RV because you are full time in the RV and that is considered your residence and therefore subject to property tax.
Thankfully we are not faced with these issues, and I can see reasons for having domicile in a favorable state.

It's all starting to fall into place for me. The reason they passed the drug law was because the folks needed some kind of relief from the vehicle tax bills.
We summer in Colorado, love the Durango area.

WV is around $38 for a three year plate. 5% tax at purchase time then personal property taxes each year that decrease with the rig value. They do not itemize our taxes but I know last year we paid $1900 that included boat (2007), camper (2011), and four vehicles ranging from 2007 to 2012. Property taxes on house and land are a separate item. Personal property tax receipts are required for all vehicle annual registration and plate renewals. Insurance is a different animal, have polices on boat, jetski , rv , and the four vehicles. The insurance total is depressing!!

Colorado soaks us pretty good. Paying $1800 to register a non motorized trailer that spends about 50 hours per year rolling down the road is akin to hiway robbery.
While I truly love living here, the high registration fees are a burr in my saddle.

In NC the property tax and plates are separate but you cannot renew your tags unless the taxes are paid. Tags $22.00, taxes $700.00+.

We went with south dakota because we needed a mail service. Besides getting our mail there, as residences of SD we can buy a truck/trailer with only a 3% sales tax on the difference of a trade in.
Insurance is less expensive from Michigan.
And license plates are not too expensive. $30 for truck.

We also chose South Dakota, but price wasn't the only factor. Ease of dealing with motor vehicle issues was an important factor. We have to make an appearance in the state once every 5 years to renew our drivers licenses. Other than that, all other motor vehicle transactions can be handled on line or via email or telephone. In the past year we've bought and/or sold five vehicles/trailers in our transition to full timing with all transactions with the state done electronically. Conversely, we have a friend who recently bought a motor home. He is pretty much full timing, but since he maintains his domicile in Ohio, had to drive the rig to Ohio in order to get plates for it.

In my opinion, Maine is pretty expensive. The 1st year we registered our 2011 it was over $1800.00 for the excise tax, plates are separate. They do not go buy what you paid for it, the sticker price is what they charge you on. This year (our 2nd year) it was over $1100.00, it goes down a bit every year, then eventually that is it. Can't remember if it's the 5th year or 7th year that the reduction stops.
