281 OR 71 to the Valley

I would appreciate some input from the experienced travelers. If I am coming out of San Antonio on 37 would it be better to take 281 or stay on 37 a little while longer and grab 71???

I am not going to be as lucky as most of you. I can only be gone from my business for two weeks,(AND I'AM RETIRED ha ha ha) so I will be trying to drive from Topeka, Kansas to Fort Worth 525 miles first day and then another 525 or so to Mercedes the second day...(MAYBE) If I can't make those mile's SAFELY I would appreciate your suggestions for a over night CG around San Antonio after leaving Fort Worth on my second day.

Thank John
