Tires

We just got back from a 8900 mile trip and it seems my tires aren't wearing even on my Mont. I have the psi the tire calls for, but they seem to be wearing on the inside a little. Any ideas?

Ned,

Axle alignment seems to be a common problem with inside wear, or it could be overloading.

I agree with Brad it's probably one of those two things. What brand are your axles? The axles that had the most problems were the Al-Kober? The Dexters seem to be ok.

Strangely enough the tires on my Dexter axles were wearing on the outside and I had to have them aligned

I would first have your coach weighed. If all checks out there, I would then look into axle alignment as mentioned.

Ned - You need an alignment. I took mine in before we headed south and there are some shops that can do it. They take measurements with lasers and get a precise line on how your axels are aligned. Then they jack your whole unit up and with hydraulic presses they very gently bend the axels in place till they are in line. My job cost me about $250, but it was worth it for the tire wear you save.

Thanks to you all... This is my 5th camper, 2nd 5th wh.. and I never knew you had to get aligned...I will do this now although it is new or had about 2000 miles when we left for our trip and I wouldn't have thought that would be the problem. Now overloading is a possibility, I carry a lot of junk. I seem to think I will need every tool I own and never need them, that is unless I don't have.
We did go on some really sharp turns...You people that live in the mountains are lucky to have the beauty, but down here in louisiana, we aren't taught to drive on such curves and hills....

ned, go to the home page, scroll down the right hand column, and you will find the directions. Just click it and away you go.

On Edit - If you run into trouble, send a PM to Glenn ( Glenn and Loraine ), and he will help you out.

Hi Ned,

Hey, do you live in tornado alley? Heard on GMA this morning that you had tornadoes again last nite/this morning in LA & MS.

As for the pictures you asked about, I just got mine going yesterday. If you have trouble, I'd be happy to help ya.

There are probably differing opinions on this. I have had axles aligned only once in five fifthwheels. My method is to have this done only when I see evidence in the tires that there is a problem. I had it done to our 2003 Montana in late 2004 and it cost me $75 per axle. The work was done in Elkhart, IN, by a shop recommended by Keystone. We had no more tire wear problems after that. It's too early to tell on this Montana.

Steve,
I agree with you that there should be no reason to have the axles aligned unless there is an indication of a problem.

Jack
