Window seals

On our 2004 Mountaineer the windows frames appears to have their own rubber edge which sit what appears to be a rubber seal within the cut for the window openning. That base rubber seal appears to be drying and cracking on all our windows. I'm concerned this is going to eventually lead to water leaks. Has anyone else encountered this problem and suggest a resolution to it?

I've edited this post to include an image of what I tried to describe above. You can see the outside seal cracks (also the pull away on the inside seal on the corner). I was wondering if trimming the cracked outer seal and applying a silicone seal in its place might make sense or just to leave well enough alone. Thoughts?

I am not an expert on this but would do as you suggest - trim off the dead stuff and apply a good bead of silicone seal/caulk.

315RLS,
I noticed the same thing on my 03 last year. I keep finding small pieces stuck to the side when I wash it.

It bugged me enough that I took a blade and trimmed off the dead stuff. There seems to be plenty of good seal between the window and siding, so I didn't do anything more. No leaks so far.
