50 amp electric cord

I'm new to the large 50 amp cord and it seems really awkward to lug it back and forth from the basement storage compartment. (we had a Mountaineer w/30 amp built in cord before, 3455SA Montana now) I haven't seen it discussed here before, but somebody must have an easier solution than what I have been doing. Any suggestions? Thanks.

If you don’t need the benefit of the full 50 amp service you can use an adapter and a 30 amp cord. We often use the 30 amp cord. The 50 would be required if you have two A/C’s.

Not too many options. And we are finding it more and more common that if your rig is 50Amp, the campground will require you to get a 50AMP site if available, both because they can charge you a couple dollars more per nite, and because campgrounds are in fact experiencing pedestal damages from use of pigtails and folks pushing the amp envelope. If you keep your power cord in a basket, at least you have some handles to carry it with, you can pull out only as much cord as you need for hookup, and easy to coil when packing up. Some Class A motorhomes have power cord spools, maybe you can find one you can adapt and install in the fifthwheel. For us, no big deal, guess we have gotten used to it over the years, just good exercise.

Thanks for the reply, 1retired06, I thought about a 5 gallon plastic bucket, but haven't tried it yet...last weekend in the rain just about brought out the worst in me by the time I got it put away...so I thought I would try here...basket sounds like a better idea, the bucket probably would be too small.

While in transit, I just throw my power cord in the bed of the truck ... don't have to precisely coil it up ... just toss it in.

We use a plastic storage container for ours. If I didn't have the generators, propane tanks and gas tank in the back of the truck I'd be like Diesel Guy and just toss it back there when traveling. One thing you can count on: If a wind comes up that blows it out, losing the cord won't even be on your top ten list of things to worry about.

X2 Mine is plugged in 99% of the time. whether at a CG or at home. Only time I have to store the cord is like dieselguy, in the back of the truck between set ups. And you don't have to be too fancy putting it in the back of the truck

Wait until you try to coil it up in the winter!

I like the idea that the Alpine has. A 50AMP cord caddy mounted in the basement.

MorRyde now has a reel for the 50amp cord. I now mount mine in the bed of the truck. I used to use a 5 gal. Bucket! But was hard to store in the winter.
With the reel it's easy now! http://www.morryde.com/aftermarket/o...y-reel-79.html

Our dealer gave us a round laundry basket with the cord coiled nicely inside it. I have used that same basket for the past 5 years and it works fine, but a bit heavy to hoist back into the basement...

Those are cool, but I think I will just "throw" mine in the truck or in the front storage compartment.

Now we are talking about something I know all about, heavy cables. The easiest way to is to get a long piece of heavy velcro maybe 12-15 inchs long. Pull the cable out straight and start a coil about the size of a small tire or what ever size you are comfortable with and take the velcro a wrap around close to the plug and cable to hold it, then put it on the ground and roll it along like rolling a tire, when you get to the end wrap the velcro around the whole thing. It's usually easier to roll it up then to try and coil it holding it. Then I just put in the basement. But I also like the pickup bed thing too....

We bought a pair of the Lippert drawers that mount behind the tandem axles. I keep the 50A cord and a couple of dapters on the drivers side and the 30A stuff on the curb side. As long as I get out what I need before the slides are extended, it's easy breezy.

I also got the white basket from the dealer and have used it for the past 3 years. It works well, but is a little heavy to lift up and down.

I also have the storage drawers. The power cord and adapters go in one and the chocks and blocks go in the other. Both things come out before the slides go out and get put away after the slides go in. It freed up alot of room in the basement.

We opted for getting a marinco 30 amp cord with a 50 amp plug on the camper end. Hard to believe how much easier it is to deal with. We seldom need more than 30 amps, but the 50 is in a grain tub just in case.

Good idea. I use my 30 amp cord much more often than the 50 amp.

Ski Doo x 2, but we keep both cord sets in the drawers.
