Hooking up at 45 degree angle

Need advice on pulling out of tight site.
I got backed into a tight site and I have to pull out tomorrow am. It looks like I can pull out more easily if I back in the truck to hook up to the 5th wheel pin at about a 45 degree angle to the right side of the RV (40 ft Montana 3402 RL). I normally back in straight from the front to hook up. Have not done it at an angle. Any advice on if or how it might work this way?

I hook all the time not being straight to the unit and 45° is not out of the question as i have had to hooked 90° to pull a unit out, just watch your tail gate as it could hit the front of the 5ver at that angle and try to keep the pin at the right height so the corner of the pin box dosent dig in to the hitch saddle.

You can hook up and pull away at any angle that you like. Be mindful of the swing behind the axles when you do so. I always have a spotter when pulling out onto the road from a site.

I have hitched up at an angle many times. 45 degrees may not work as the tailgate may hit the camper. You may have to have someone raise the gate as you back up once the pin clears the gate.

When I have, I back under the pin box just enough to raise the tailgate before it hits the trailer. Then I raise the pin box to where bottom of the pin box plate is about level with the top of the hitch plate. Backing straight, it would normally be an inch or so below to ride up onto the hitch. But the pin box plate will not ride up on the hitch very well at that angle since you are not backing directly to the upturned front lip. Otherwise no problem.

If someone has told you it can't be done it could be because they have a Pullrite or similar hitch. On those "self sliders" they are right, you do have to hookup straight.

As Dick said if you have a slider hitch you have to be straight on to hook up. The other hitches i dont see a problem with.

Did have to take it carefully and get the hitch and pin lined up really well. The site was not level which complicated it. Also the advice about getting the pin just slightly higher than the hitch saddle was important as well. Once the hitch slid “clicked” into place I knew we were good. We could then pull out of the site easily. Again thanks to your great advice it all worked as expected.

I do it and have the added wrinkle of walking the truck up the curb and engage the hitch at the same time. (think 3D checkers) One thing I found that works on my setup, once the angle gets bigger the tailgate can stay down and not dig into the front of the Monty. have not done it enough to be able to just lower the tailgate and not worry.
