Honda Generator

I didn't know it but Honda generators and other Honda engines have a noise suppressor in the spark plug cap. If it goes bad the engine wont start. To find it take the spark plug cap off and unscrew the brass plug down in it. The suppressor and a small spring will fall out. It can be tested with a continuity tester, and can be replaced with a piece of medal 3\16 by 3\4 long. I don't know often they go bad but they do and it might be a good idea to have a spare or a dummy one to replace it with.

I think I'm with CORattler in how you able to figure that one out. Debugging a generator means, I check for fuel, make sure the switches are in the right place and that's pretty much it. I'm gonna have to go look at mine to understand what you're talking about. But I'm gonna go have some dinner so it will have to be some time later.

Does your fix mean you no longer have noise suppression since you are now just using a small piece of metal? And by noise suppressor I imagine you mean electrical noise not decibels and with that piece of metal you are pretty much overriding whatever was there. Does this mean you intend to order a proper replacement? Not being as electrical savvy, I'm just trying to understand the importance and long term ramifications. I have two of these that I want to keep running without major repairs because someone else is way smarter than me and will charge a fortune for the information. Thanks a bunch for helping me understand.

Yes it is electrical noise. I can't see how replacing it could in any way do any harm to the engine but a dummy could interfere with some electrical device. As to how I found it, my leaf vacuum wouldn't start and I live in the woods. There is a lot of incentive there to fix it.

Thanks for the info, I did not know it either. I guess a guy could do the metal fix, then order one from a Honda parts place and replace it when it came in. I would imagine it just removes the ground aspect of a spark plug when it goes Tango Uniform.

mlh - I didn't know it either but it makes sense since lots of these generators are used to power things that the noise would interfer with, like radios, televisions and computers, none of which like noise.

Anyone who has had a ham radio license for a long time will remember the noises we were subjected to in our mobile rigs, generator, alternator and ignition noises were "suppressed" over the years in various ways with varying success. Remember when they went from stranded spark plug wires to carbon filled, rarely is there a problem these days.

I owned a construction equipment rental business until retirement and I rented generators from 1500 watt to 6500 watt, most of them were Honda albeit not the type now sold as RV type. I had no idea there might have been something in the spark plug cap that acted as a noise suppressor, and I never had a problem with one in that area. Honda were the quietest running, required the least maintenance and overhauls of any we owned.

That's a new one on me and tells us again we can always learn something new.

I checked 3 Honda engines, one being my 3000 watt generator and they all had the suppressor. If your generator quits running check to see if the pug is firing if not I think a small piece of stranded wire rapped around the suppressor should fix the problem until a new suppressor can be found. You might make a temporary fix out of a finish nail.
