Trickle Charge Batteries Inside? Dangerous?
Looking for suggestions...
Trickle charged my 1 12v battery over the winter in my house. Now have 2 6v Trojan batteries. Charger can support 2 batteries. Dangerous doing this inside?
Some say just leave in rig over the winter. OK to leave it in cold weather Dec thru March? While not N Dakota...it gets below freezing here routinely.

I have my unit plugged in all the time year around and do not have any problems with batteries,just check levels and add as necessary. Colorado climate.

We full time, and never worry about the battery freezing, because we are regularly plugged in, and the built-in battery charger keeps our batteries fully charged. I think the number is -76 degrees when a fully charged battery will freeze. If I had to winterize the rig, I would also keep it plugged in to maintain the batteries.

I look at it this way ... as long as they're charged or on a maintainer ... your RV battery would fair no differently in cold weather than your truck or car batteries. I have keep a battery in my basement all winter hooked to a maintainer without issue. Old wives tale or not, I set it on a piece of wood though.

The charging of lead-acid batteries can be hazardous in confined spaces. However, many workers may not see it that way since it is such a common activity in many workplaces. The two primary risks are from hydrogen gas formed when the battery is being charged and the sulfuric acid in the battery fluid.
No smoking or sparks.

You can do either one. Just remember some trickle chargers will only keep batteries charged, they will not bring dead batteries up to charged.

I deal with a Interstate battery distributor. They keep 15 to 20 batteries on trickle chargers all the time in a small 10 X 12 room or something close to that size.

A fully charged battery will not freeze under normal conditions, but a drained battery will. If left hooked up in your rig, however, even if the disconnect switch is on the phantom draws will take it down over time and then it will freeze.

That is why you disconnect the cable. Mine goes 6 months or longer every year here in Arizona. Always is charged in spring - at least enough to run landing gear.

Ditto Twindman. I have never removed batteries from the rig during the winter and have always had charge in the Spring. The rig sits through a variety of temps including sub-zero from Thanksgiving to Easter. I do make sure they are charged when the rig is put up and I do have a disconnect/isolation switch on the batteries which is turned off for the winter.

No acid, no fumes, no problem. Just make sure your charger has a setting for AGM's.
