Goodyear G614

Looks like they'll go "Kaboom!" also.



This came from one of the diesel forums I frequent. Happened around Waco, TX. Outside temperature was 94*. OP said he had checked tires and pressures leaving Austin. Loud bang and lots of damage.

Would be interesting to know how many miles were on this tire and if he was using a Pressure Pro monitoring system. I still think for the money the G614's are the best tire for my use. The only other tire I would consider is the Michelin, however they don't make the size I have to have. GBY....

Iam sure all brands of tires have had blow outs,even Michelins.
Michelin doesn't make a tire for the heavier trailers such as the 3400. The G614 is the only American made tire that is rated to handle the weight.

what about the 110 lbs of air pressure. I think most stock wheels (at least the aluminum ones) can't handle that pressure. The only numbers on mine make me think I can only go up to 90 lbs.

I just read the OP on http://www.thedieselspot.com/forums/ .
He said he was running at 65 MPH with 92 Lbs. pressure and the OAT was 94 degree's. His trailer is at least a 36 footer if not more,remember these tires are rated at 110 PSI. He also stated his tires we're 5 years old.
He had no TPMS.

Low air pressure caused heat to build up and the end results is boom. Also if he run the tires any at all 5 years is good and the tire looked as if it had been worn even accross the tire, to the point the tire looks as if no tread was left. I run my 614's at 110 lbs. And is constantly monitored by the Pressure Pro. I read someplace that low air pressure is the major cause of tire failure. I also run a set of Missions on my Car hauler, inclosed 30' trailer. I run them at the max pressure at all times, also have Freestar which I believe is the replacement for the Missions, just my opinion. The Freestars are on the Gooseneck equipment trailer and run at max pressure and of course is monitored by the Pressure Pro. I wouldn't run Missions or Freestars on my 5th wheel. The key thing is don't leave home without the Pressure Pro system. GBY......

Looks like those tires are rated at 3300 lbs. at 90psi. NADA shows his RV model at 9999lbs; dry weight I would think. Sure sounds light for a 37 footer. I would suspect the 5 years on the tires may have been the culprit (I missed the age of the tires first time I read the post).

Jack, if you'll follow that load/inflation chart link on that page, it'll give you the load ratings at various pressures. That's where I got the 3300 @ 90psi. Don't know why the OP was running 92 psi. I still have the E rated Chinese bombs still on mine, and I run at the max pressure of 80psi (never weighed the trailer).

I run these tires with high pressure rims and metal stems at 110 psi on my 2955rl. IMHO these are the best tires for the investment I have in the Monty. They hold pressure really well. The tires show no abnormal wear to date. I will buy them again when we get ready for the Alaska trip.

I run the Goodyear G614's. The Aluminum rims are stamped as rated for 110 psi. My tire man checked, showed it to me when he mounted them. I also use the metal stems. I am reasonably sure not all rims are rated for 110 psi, but the ones on the 2008 Big Sky are. Having said that Keystone shipped the unit with E-rated Missions.

The rims on the 2008 3400RL have been recertified for 110 lbs.
I have a letter from Tredit wheel and Tire to prove it.

We were overweight and had a bulge on one of our original tires. We went to a dealer and asked for the Goodyear G 614 tires. He suggested that we would be happier with the performance and price of the "G" rated Hankook 750 R 16. He was right. We've been all over the southern US and Mexico and are pleased with how the Hankooks perform at 100 PSI.
We didn't need a replacement, but noticed that the Hankooks were available in Mexico also.
Oh yea, the price was about $135 each, about a third that of the Goodyear.

I had a SUV with Hankook tires on them. Never had a problem with them, but I have never heard of them before, or after - up to now.

I posted pictures in another thread of a sticker placed on the inside of my rims stating they were rated for 110 psi. This sticker was right next to the embossed raised letters stating 80 psi. I guess sticker out safety's embossed. A conversation with tredit revealed that Keystone wanted them re-certified. Would I trust those rims with a sticker saying 110 when it was mfg's saying 80? I don't think so!!

I went to the Hankook(?) website but could not find the right size. I'm not sure what the metric conversion is for 235/85 is.

Their site is not the most user friendly site I've ever seen. That being said, I knew an older Chevy I owned had the 235/85 tires on it. So, they do have that size.

I plan to run the G614s on my stock wheels like Jack. I am satisfied that the wheels were retested by Tredit to 110psi at the request of Keystone in anticipation of finding tires for the new 7K axles (even though they ended up with Marathon at half the cost after Marathon came out with a compatible size in 2007). Per Tredit, the wheels have always been exclusive to Montana (model T6 I believe), and the test was performed with no change in the manufacturing process, therefore all of the T6 wheels should be good to 110 psi regardless of manufacturer date. How they tested, I have no idea, but I'm sure it was the same test they used to get the 80psi rating, and I haven't heard of a busted wheel yet after 3 years of production. I think I'm willing to run the risk of the wheel exploding over the risk of continuing to push these Mission tires, or changing to another brand with a lesser rating than I require for these axles.

Funny - I was looking at the load range table and if you reduce the pressure in the G614 to 80psi, you're back to the 3,042 load rating you get with any standard E rated trailer tire, only your about $500 poorer.

I had Greenball G series tires (Hiway Troopers) on my last rig after being forced to replace the tires in Utah. I didn't have them long before we sold the rig, but they did perform well for the duration we had them. Comparable in cost to the Goodyear.
