2500HD

one ? can you say pull a 3400 montana with a 2500HD w/o the allison trans? I know it over limit but just thought thanks wally

I am guessing that means no diesel either......it all depends on engine size, gear ratio, 2x4 or 4x4,etc........you really didn't give us much to go on..............need more info wally

Wally, I'm going to jump in here and answer part of your question. Yes, you can pull the 3400 with the 6.0 gas engine. However, you will not go far or fast and your mpg will really suck!
Remember, I can move the Montana with a 10hp garden tractor, not far, and not fast! That's a hypothetical situation there.
A 2500HD with NO less than a 8.1 with manual tranny will be required to safely travel down the highways. I don't know the stats, but I would guess that 90% of the 2500 HDs have a diesel/Allison.
You need to give us an idea of what you have in the hd and if it has trailer package, mainly, how it's set up now.
My 2500 HD will pull the 3400 and thinking about, I think my model 3280 has about the same gvw and maybe more pin weight than a 3400.

6.0 gasser..............hmmmmm pre Alison could be taking this question back to the 7.4L aspirated, which would also pull it .......... at about 2 mpg.

If you have a pre new emission truck (07 Classic or earlier), with the 6.0L gas engine, the GCWR is 16,000. No where near enough for a 3400.

You might pull it but not very fast or very far. Stopping is another matter. Also need to check rating and capacity on tires.

Thanks everyone for info ,sorry about the info on truck but early morn.you know. The truck is what I am looking at (don't have yet) is a 2500 hd dodge desiel with tow pack or the 2500 hd chev. maybe w/o allaison tran hope this will be more thanks again wally

I don't think you can get a Chev 2500HD without the Allison. You can get a Silverado, but not in the 2500HD version. (If I am wrong about this, feel free to correct me.)

...he already knows about the 2500HD and weights, and without the Allison that tells me he's looking at a 6 litre 2500HD (yes - you can get the Silverado, I had one). That combo is gonna suck realy bad unless he pulls under 10k (and even then), so that isn't gonna happen with a 5'er.
At least if he got a diesel he could pull it...but I have a feeling he knows this already too.

Same here. I had an 03 Silverado 2500HD 6.0L auto with 4.10 gears. Pulled the TT with it. Lots of gas, not much power.

I'll step in. Check my signature Wally. When I got my Dodge the only difference between the 2500 and the 3500 was: $500, two extra leaf springs on each side, another 900 lbs in GVWR. For $500 there was no question about the 3500. In talking to other RVers with the gas engine they all most weep when we discuss mpg. I am not a GM fan but if you go with the Chev definitely get the duramax alison at 3500. You won't regret it no matter which of the two you end up with. In summary 3500, diesel, automatic.

Yes - it does speak volumes Steve, but that's not a good thing. Its more like a bad rap and I believe misleading information provided on this forum leads to a good percentage of those numbers.

Bsmeaton you talk all th etime about towing with 3/4 ton not being safe and yet you tow a boat behind your fiver. Why is that? That is much more dangerous than what those people with 3/4 ton trucks are doing. Here is the picture in your profile bsmeaton.

That was Brad's old setup. He has not duplicated that now that he has a 3400RL. I think he learned some things along the way like we all do. Towing double is an old abused subject on this forum. Been discussed and rediscussed just like this subject.
