my new f350, 6.4,

I picked it up tonight! Still in shock, don't know how it works, but what an improvement over my 02 250 super, 7.3. Question, I thought I somewhere about a break in period. I forgot, is there one?
It sure rides nice and purty!
Tonight it sits, tomorrow reality sits in and I play. I didn't buy extended warranty, used to sell them and thats how the dealership makes $$. Any advantage to do so now? Thanks in advance!!!!

Congrats on a fine choice. By-the-way, now you get to change your signature. Discovery of the new toy's attributes is fun. Yes, you need to put 500 miles on the truck before towing. Then there is some instructions about the first 500 miles of towing too.

My shinny new F-350 6.4l is now about 5 weeks old and has 65 hours on the motor. It runs better every week, Pulled the 3400 anchor for the first time with 635 miles on the truck. I think I will buy the extended Ford Warranty as we plan to keep this one for awhile and if something breaks it can be real expensive. You can buy the warranty on line directly from Ford. I am still figuring out how everything works. First time we opened the hood and the entire grill came off we thought we broke the truck.

Mine is in the shop with leaky rad. Been told it's a problem becoming common. I had to have my Big Sky towed by a friend from a campground that closed for the season. New rad comes from the States in 5 business days so I am down for a week. Wasn't fun this past weekend. Plus, if you can believe this, Ford advised dealers in a service bulletin to check the new rad for the same fault. ???? Don't you think they should be looking for that before it is shipped?

Here's the TSB

2008 F-SUPERDUTY - 6.4L ENGINE - MAY EXHIBIT COOLANT LEAKS LOCATED AT THE RADIATOR SIDE TANK CRIMPING AREA.
SOME 2008 SUPER-DUTY VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH A 6.4L DIESEL ENGINE MAY EXHIBIT COOLANT LEAKS AT THE RADIATOR SIDE TANK CRIMPING AREA. ALL SERVICE PARTS WITH A BUILD DATE OF 8/6/2007 OR LATER ARE CERTIFIED STOCK. BEFORE INSTALLING SERVICE PARTS WITH A BUILD DATE PRIOR TO 8/6/07 VISUALLY INSPECT TO ENSURE THAT END TANK CRIMP TABS ARE COMPLETELY CLOSED AND NO CRACKS ARE PRESENT AT THE TRANS COOLER LINE FITTINGS OR INLET/OUTLET PORTS. BUILD DATES ARE LOCATED ON A YELLOW OR WHITE LABEL LOCATED ON THE TOP RADIATOR CROSS RAIL. AFTER THE RADIATOR IS REMOVED FROM IT'S PACKAGING INSPECT TO VERIFY THERE IS NO DAMAGE PRESENT THAT MAY RESULT IN A LEAK OR REPEAT REPAIR.

There are a lot of reports of this problem at DieselStop. While I was reading it last week little did I know it was about to happen to me.

Thanks for posting the TSB, good luck with your truck. I had my '06 shut down in the Ozark mountains in a rainstorm...pulling my Montana. Took me 6 hours to get going, had to have John Hogan (my good friend and MOC member) come back and tow the Montana to the Campground. A high pressure oil line failure.
I hope this is the last of your problems.

Thanks Ozz. This is the first tick of a problem with the F350. Ford wouldn't tow the Big Sky as they considered it to be in a safe location even though the campground closed over the weekend and wanted the unit out ASAP. The truck has been a gem but I am taking a LOT of good natured heat from my Chev and Dodge buddies today. Could have been a lot worse, like being stranded in the mountains like you.

An update. Delivery on the new rad took only 3 days. Picked up the truck at the dealers on Sat morning, went for the Big Sky, hitched up and drove about 5 miles when rad hose blew off. Yep, back to the shop. Course it being Saturday no one to repair the problem. Keys for the rental turned in and no vehicle to get home with. Thank heavens for friends.

75 hours on the motor now and it is doing better all the time.Took about a 100 mile drive on the interstate today and got 16.4 MPG average.Nothing like the 19's those Duramax's get on another thread but this 08 Ford has a smaller motor 6.4l and is several hundred lbs heavier. This one with full fuel and two folks in it comes in at over 9200lbs.. That may have something to do with the lower MPG. I did get 18.5 dropping into the Cuyahoga Valley on I-480 East bound so I guess I could record that//however we will not mention the 15.1 going up the other side. we maintained 60 MPH (speed limit) and at the end of the day we did 16.4 for the entire trip. That is not to bad.

I'll wager that those Duramax's getting 19 are 4X2s, and most likely not 07.5s or later with the DPF additions. I test drove a 2008(07.5???) 4X4 yesterday and it only showed 12.7 when I got in; I reset the guage and drove a little over 20 total miles and it was at 13.7 when I pulled into the dealers lot. Of that 20 miles, some was in town, some was on a local highway at 65 to 70 mph; a stop, U-Turn, and then return on that same route. Unit has a little over 400 miles on it now -- all demo miles.

My 06 Dodge 5.9L gives me 16.8 in town so I think I'll keep it awhile longer (although those new Fords and Chev's (and even the newer Dodges) are quieter.)

On edit -- thought I'd better add - all these mileage figures are using the overhead display (Dodge) or console display (Chev).

One thing I can't believe I don't have is an outside temperature gage. Is it there & I am missing it somewhere?

Lariat. You must have Mike. Mine is part of the heater/AC display, right side, but I think another option has the temp in your Rear View mirror.
