Where are those low 40's at. I bought a 2013 Ram DRW 5 years ago and paid mid 40's plus ttl. Mine was the basic model with cloth seats. The Rams are the cheapest price and i doubt you could buy anything for less than 50 thousand now and that would be pretty basic.

Waynemoore. My truck is paid off now but I am considering buying a new truck in 3 to 4 years. It would be nice to go that long without a note. I know buying a new truck won’t gurantee I won’t have a breakdown but I assume it would lessen the odds. I plan on pulling a 5th wheel for another 10 years or so. Buying a new truck now would give me a little more peace of mind. I just wanted to see about the xoeriences if others who have made long distance trips with trucks that have 150K to 175K miles.
When you buy your new truck you may wonder why you didn't do it sooner. I would think you can get buy on your trips with your current truck. Payments may be easier to take while you are still working.
The newer trucks are so much better than a 10 year old truck in ride, towing, creature comforts. Don't go to the dealer and drive one. You'll be sorry LOL

I traded my 2005 2500HD Duramax for a 2015 3500HD Duramax SRW. My 2500 only had 92k miles on it and I hadn't only minor problems. Things that my Banks programmer caused and put me in limp mode a half dozen times. Never buy Banks but that's a different story.

Bought the 2015 3500HD Duramax LTZ 3 months ago, had 39K on it. It was just what I was looking for. SRW and a long bed. My brother wanted me to get a dually since he has a 2011 GMC. I do not need a dually with my 3582RL and did not want one to drive around here in the Dallas/Ft. Worth metroplex.

I will say 'wow' what a difference 10 years makes. The new truck is smoother riding, advanced technology and handles the Montana great. Although we have not been able to go on a long trip yet due to me still working and just starting a new crew change where I work. The short trip we went on the truck pulled a lot better. The new exhaust brake and tranny control is going to be nice.

I wouldn't be afraid to take your 08' Duramax with only 140k on it anywhere if it's been taken care of. I've seen several with over 300k on them and still going strong. Also don't be afraid to trade for a newer one, you will be happy with it also.

I have a 2016 F 350 4 x 4 XLT (bought new) that was advertised for $44,000. I traded my Dodge on this truck, so I'm not sure what I could have negotiated under this. Actually, I think you can purchase a Dodge for less than this -- prices could be higher now, but I doubt by a lot. Google Dennis Dillon Dodge, and you can see quotes in the low to mid forties on new Dodge Cummins trucks.

Duramax

I traded my 03 2500 long bed SRW on the 2014 1 ton. I will echo previous post about the improvements in new generation trucks. Wow!

03 had 265k when I traded it in...not trouble free however. New injectors at 175k. Had to get tranny rebuilt at 165k due to some internal harness that went bad and the guy said we might as well rebuild while we have it off. Unfortunately I don’t recall the details. Several alternators. Brake hydro boost unit. Several bearing replacements. The fuel injector control module started showing mysterious signs of pending failure and truck would just die. It seemed like we had something go wrong on every trip we took. DW said “that’s it...new truck or I’m not going anywhere”. Truck had been paid off for a long time but we were making $1200 payments every time something went wrong.

Found the 2014 1 ton, 2 yrs old at the time with 13k miles on it for $50k. It now has 83k on it. Incredible truck and a pleasure to drive. The exhaust brake feature blew me away in the Arkansas hills a few weeks ago. There has been couple of DEF related warranty issues but they were minor. When I bought it I talked to my independent diesel mechanic and he encouraged me to delete DEF after warranty ran out. I checked with him again a couple of months ago and he has changed his opinion on delete. Seems it was a bigger problem on 2011-12 models but he has seen fewer problems with newer gen models. Plus if you delete DEF dealer will not accept the truck in future trade.

I gave $45k for the 2015 Chevy 3500HD LTZ Duramax in April. It had 39k miles on it. I'm enjoying it so far but have only made 3 payments. Decided it was time to trade so it can be paid off in 3 yrs when I retire. Received almost the exact same $$ I have gave for my 05' in on trade that I had paid for in 7 years earlier.

Like I said earlier a world of difference in it and my 05' 2500HD Duramax. Rides smoother, quieter, advance technology, long bed is nice and it pulls the Montana nice. Better mpg. I'm going to enjoy the new exhaust brake and tranny control when we get to the mountains with the Montana.

The wife enjoys the quieter smoother ride. Still can't believe I gave $45k for a used pickup.

165000 miles

I have an 07 f250 with greater than 163k miles and it is strong pulling my 34rl Montana.. It has begun to nickel and dime me a bit. I had the hoses, belts and fluids all changed at about 100k miles. I have experienced, oil and fuel leaks that have interfered with trips, and replaced all the steering parts. These issues are a bother and an expense but the thought of the cost of a new or even newer used truck is outrageuos. I plan making 400k miles before being burried in this truck.

I have a 2002 gmc duramax with 211000 miles . I have put about 8000 miles pulling the 5th wheel in the last 12 months . I weigh 19000 pounds all hooked up. I have no problem taking off tomorrow on a long trip. If your 2008 has been maintained good you should not having any more or less worries about breaking down with it or a new one.The only advantage I can see with a new one is having a warranty. 50000 or more to pay for a new one seems crazy to me .You will never put that much in repairs in the next 10 years.

Just sold an extra Reese 20k 5th wheel hitch I had to a Hot shot driver. He had a 2010 F350 that just rolled over 585k miles on it. He said that he'd had only minor problems and normal maintenance that wears out on it. He had just traded up to a small Freightliner because of the weight he sometimes pulled. He said that he had spent more on it breaking down the last month than he had on his F350 the last 3 yrs. So you never know. Nickle and dimes are cheaper than $$$ for a new truck payment. There is nothing that guarantees the new truck will not break down also.

You got it correct. The issues I've had are very acceptable. In all 163k miles I have never been stranded. Thought I was once but when the air temp got 45 the engine started even with bad glow plugs it started(still haven't replaced them). Learned to use the built in block heater when it is cold. I have less that $2,000 in actual repairs so far----far greater experience than $350 monthly payments.

2009 Silverado Duramax 197000 miles. Just got back from Yellowstone yesterday, no issues. Towed to Alaska last year starting at 160000 miles. Minor problem repaired at campsite. If your truck is well and pro-actively maintained, go for it!
