New Montana Buyers But - PDI not So Good

Well the PDI did NOT go so well.

The unit had a leak in the front bedroom - around the slide.

The dealer said it was because they just washed it and they evidently forced water into it.

They happened to have another just like it. Both units in the color we prefer.

Guess what - it was wet too!

And no, they hadn't just washed it.

I told my wife ahead of time the only reason we wouldnt be taking it home was if it had a leak.

GGRR - we are really disapointed.

The salesman tried to sell me a Bighorn with the same floorplan instead.

We had similar problem with another brand with a bedroom slide leak that was difficult to repair. We didnt want to go thru that again.

There can be so many reasons for a leak and it's good you are being cautious since you've "been there, done that". Bad seal, folded seals, bad fit, out of adjustment slide, and the list goes on. The Big Horn didn't have the problem?

I love a salesman that keeps throwing rigs at you to make the sale instead of finding out what's wrong, especially since you know Montanas are better than that.

Best of luck on your search!

I didn't encounter any leaks when I picked up our unit but can see how it could leak if the slide was partially open or closed especially if it had been raining or washed.
You didn’t mention seeing anything wrong so I'm wondering, what's your next step to insure the problems resolved?

The TV/Desk slide was also out of square with the opening and the seal had a gap. That slide was not leaking however.

The 2nd unit with the bedroom slide leak was on the other side of the bed.

Other than the leaks the units looked very nice with no other visable problems.

Although we do like the Bighorn - The Montana has some really cool new features that the Bighorn doesnt have. The Montana has nicer furniture and name brand tires. The Bighorn has motorhome style hatch doors, glazed finish cabinets with european hinges and a one piece shower.

I’ve never owned a camper of any brand that didn’t have a leak or develop one. Leaks are not a good thing where it can cause so many problems. When we got ours it was leaking in the corner of the B/R slide. We discovered it was the plastic trim which had shrunk and was allowing water to follow the plastic strip on the inside of it and take it directly into the B/R at the corner of the slide. Once we discovered the problem and fixed it, we haven’t had any more leaks.

We also had a leak in the bedroom slide but only when it was closed. It turned out to be that the seal would not curl in all the way on the lower corner towards the rear when it was retracted. So now I check it each time when I bring the slides in.

It makes me wonder what that dealer will be doing with those leaky units. Sell them only on a shiny day to an unsuspecting buyer and let them worry about it, OR doing the right thing and trying to fix it before trying to sell it. Did the dealer offer any solution, such as: "We will take it in the shop and fix it before you pick it up!"??????? We have been very lucky with ours as we have had no leaks, knock on wood......It sure seems like production woes have caught up with Keystone..Of course, I know alot of these units are error free and one hates to hear of these things. I might have to look for another dealer also, as one that would try and talk you into another unit when you want the Montana does not seem very ethical. Just think, someone will end up with the leaky ones and be constantly complaining. If the dealer can't fix it maybe they should send it back to Keystone......

The PDI is doing exactly what it is supposed to do.Do not accept delivery till every issue is corrected. Let the dealer know that the PDI will be the same no matter what brand he tries sell you. Perhaps you should talk directly with Keystone on the issues and why the dealer can not correct them. Let the dealer know you know how to do that.. The unit should not have a leak or any defects upon delivery....period.

I'm probably almost as critical of Keystone as anyone. But, most leaks can be fixed. We had to have the BR slide removed and re-roofed under warranty. I wouldn't let that in itself deter me from getting the unit I want; just make sure it is fixed. I think I might look at a different dealer also.

The trailer was flawless. We only sold it because we had a chance to buy a vacation home and would not be using it much.

Thanks! After reading the other thread about your trip using it I realized that you were pretty happy with the unit. My wife and I are actually going to go look at one this weekend.
